J (5.4) "Come quick, we found an invisible snail!"

The grown-up habit is to correct the child: "You mean the snails have a transparent shell?", or "You mean they are camouflaged against the soil?", or perhaps, "You mean they are too tiny to see?"

Well, truly - what *did* the child mean? The child calling out excitedly to share his discovery is inviting us in to have a rare glimpse through their eyes, to see the world as they experience it, if we can stop a while and listen.

'Just listening' is not as easy as it seems. If you find yourself struggling to follow along on your child's seemingly rambling tales or to engage meaningfully with their "silly" comments, then come along and find out how to ask better, more intentional questions to get to the heart of what it is they are trying to share with you.

The most well-meaning, interested adult might ask a child a question that seems innocent enough: "What are you doing?" However, it shuts down conversation as it tells the child what they are doing is not recognisable to the adult.

It also imposes the adult's preconceived notions of the image and its meaning, to the exclusion of all the other ideas the child might have had about their work.

'Just talking' is not as easy as it seems. If you find yourself being met with uncomfortable silence, or simply being ignored when you ask your child such seemingly 'safe' questions, then come along and find out how to ask better, more intentional questions to spark deeper, more thoughtful responses from your child. The past 18 months have seen us at home with our children for much more time than ever before, yet we might find the art of having sustained and stimulating conversation with children still eludes us. Beyond building language skills, speaking with children offers us a fascinating window into their unique ways of thinking, feeling and being.

In spite of the near universal recognition on the importance of “quality talk” with children, day to day conversations often leave many parents and teachers deeply frustrated. Starting and sustaining good conversations is hard work; many times, our interactions do not unfold organically in the way in which we may have envisioned them. Often, this leaves us yearning for deeper, more fulfilling conversations with the children in our lives.

We would like to invite you to explore the Anyaman approach to fostering great conversations with children. This workshop will provide participants with practical tools and techniques for questioning and listening to children, that will help bring joy and that much yearned-for deeper connection in your every day verbal interactions. In the case of child sexual abuse, many offenders try to shift the blame for their actions by accusing the child of being “promiscuous “or “seductive”. Sexual abuse is NEVER the fault of the victim.

The marks that children make might look to adult eyes as nothing more than random lines and squiggles. But in fact, scribbling is an important pre-literacy skill that builds the foundation for many other skills they will develop as they learn to write.

The bigger (and in our opinion, more important) question is not so much whether the child is memorising the words (as opposed to breaking them down phonetically), but whether they are developing the critical thinking skills needed for successful lifelong reading - which involves far more than merely being able to sound out the words in front of you.
