IEEE PROVIDES SAHUR TO KL’S HOMELESS 15/06/2016

While most Malaysians will be getting ready for bed, at around midnight tonight, members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Students branch, Kolej Rahim Kajai and the IEEE Communications Society are gathering on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Kuala Lumpur, to prepare food for 500 of the less fortunate people in the city.

The students had volunteered to host and sponsor a session of ‘JOM SAHUR!’, a weekly event organised by non-government organisation Institut Onn Ja’afar (IOJ), to provide food for Kuala Lumpur’s homeless and underprivileged denizens.

“JOM SAHUR! is an offshoot of our JOM BEKPES! breakfast soup-kitchen campaign,” said IOJ CEO Charles Mohan.

Charles explained that JOM BEKPES! was the brainchild of IOJ patron Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who is also the Defence Minister, but the campaign was temporarily altered in order for it to better serve the needy during the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan.

“JOM SAHUR! is scheduled to take place from 1am to 2am every Wednesday morning for the duration of the fasting month.

“It is being held in three locations simultaneously; here outside Yayasan Chow Kit’s KL Krash Pad on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, on Jalan Hang Lekiu, and at Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s half-way house Pusat Transit Gelandangan.”

He said that the three locations were picked as they were known to be places where Kuala Lumpur’s homeless denizens often gathered with 300 packs being distributed outside KL Krash Pad while another 100 packs were being given out at each of the other two locations.

“We also decided to give them Sahur at 1am based on feedback we received from the homeless during JOM BEKPES! sessions. They would rather take the food at 1am and then have their rest instead of having to gather at 4am.”

As for the food itself, IOJ had prepared sandwiches and fried rice, while Cotra Enterprise Sdn Bhd has donated 504 packets of its 250ml Marigold UHT 100% Apple Juice a week to be distributed during the JOM SAHUR! throughout Ramadan.

Meanwhile, CIMB Malaysia had just recently provided IOJ with a van which was used for the first time last night to bus volunteers to the other JOM SAHUR! locations.
