Topic: Negotiating Attitude in Academic Texts
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH9ClXkTO4w

Abstract
This paper makes explicit the role that language plays in realising the negotiation of meanings in academic texts. It focuses on seeing the way an academic writer engages with others in his/her text by employing evaluative language. It aims to bring a close linguistic analysis of the academic text into the relationship with the wider social and cultural context, particularly on an area of interpersonal evaluation. In this case, Appraisal System, as a branch of Systemic Functional Linguistics, provides a comprehensive tool for the
analyses. Questions addressed in the study are “How does Appraisal System function within the discourse
on academic writing?”, “How are the Frameworks within Appraisal Systems employed to investigate the realisations of the negotiation grammatically and lexically?” and “How do teachers train students to utilise this ‘new’ theory?” To answer these questions the analytical tool of Appraisal Frameworks are applied to a corpus of texts produced within the context of the supervision of students undergraduate dissertations. These texts represent the range of written genres that these students need to produce in
order to obtain their diploma in English education. This study makes use of Frameworks of ATTITUDE, GRADUATION and ENGAGEMENT from the Appraisal System for analysing the linguistic resources employed to negotiate emotions, judgments and social valuations. These frameworks prove valuable in
taking us beyond more traditional linguistics concerns with interpersonal meaning, mood and modality. Having analysed the texts this study finds that most student-writers realised that they were not aware so much their use of language, especially in considering the negotiation of the interpersonal meaning. Appraisal System helps them improve the quality of their writings, the way they negotiate the messages. Teachers should make students realize the importance of appraisal values in a text. Moreover, this study provides insights into the training process and into the function and role of the writing classes both within and beyond the school context. Writing academic by considering the appraisal resources trains students into an abstract world of grammatical metaphor, which provides them with the linguistic means to talk about interpersonal meaning, and about the positioning and persuading strategies necessary for social positions of responsibility.

Topic: Nexus of Inquiry-Based Instruction, Active Learning and
Formative Assessment in Education
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhR7X3DLeKU

Abstract
In today’s flexible learning and virtual space environments, the way forward for leading change has witnessed a shift towards inquiry-based instruction, active learning and formative assessment. This has also been well articulated by the many initiatives from the Malaysian Ministry of Education through the launch of two national education blueprints. As the nation journeys into 21st century, practitioners in Malaysia are taking incremental steps in shifting from teacher-centred to student-centred learning environments in a bid to prepare millennials for the keen competitive markets of tomorrow. Such a move, warrants a critical and timely move towards the adoption of a more comprehensive and effective
structure of curriculum which focuses on inquiry-based instruction and active learning approaches that are able to provide on-going constructive feedback via formative assessment that can positively affect learners and their learning experience. This paper discusses two main issues. First, it deliberates inquiry-based instruction, active learning and formative assessment. Then it discusses the nexus of relationship among the variables with evidence of empirical studies and concludes with some recommendations for
both universities and educational practitioners alike to enhance teaching and learning experience in their
respective classrooms.

Topic: Humanizing Language Teaching and Learning: The NLP Approach

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ0wCGKO6Cc

Abstract
Language teaching and learning worldwide is embracing rapid change due to globalization, competition, market orientation and technology. Language teaching and learning in the modern world puts emphasis on maximizing learners’ potential through immersive learning. Along with this are greater calls to humanize language teaching and learning to ensure that these processes are contextualized, dynamic, and is geared towards a personalized experience for students, taking into account students’ personalities
and learning styles. Several researchers have argued for the use of the Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to humanize teaching and learning. NLP is a tool based on the way the brain works and an
understanding of the mental and cognitive processes behind human behavior. Despite having sceptics, particularly in terms of its applicability and 'quasi science' nature, recent research has shown that through recognizing patterns and communication model, NLP can contribute towards the betterment of the teaching and learning process. This paper presents an overview of the findings in current research focusing on NLP in teaching and learning and discusses the implications of these findings for English language learning. The paper concludes by suggesting several NLP techniques that are useful for
language teachers.

Topic: Foregrounding endangered languages: Engaging in change
through language research
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZ0wCGKO6Cc

Abstract
It is estimated that almost 80% of languages in Malaysia are considered to be under threat. These include indigenous languages and creoles. Whilst there has been considerable research on Malaysia languages, including endangered languages, the main output tends to be in the form of academic publications. Given the importance of language for (i) communication; (ii) creating a sense of identity; (iii) information and knowledge transfer; and (iv) promoting sustainable development, how can language researchers make a difference where endangered languages are concerned? This is the main question that will be addressed in this talk, which will look at ways in which language researchers can foreground endangered languages.
This could be through creating awareness of the existences of these languages and reducing negative or stereotypical views to developing creative opportunities to use and learn a language.

Biodata
Dr Stefanie Pillai is a Professor at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, University of Malaya (UM). Her main areas of research interest are the acoustic features of spoken languages, particularly Malaysian English and Malacca Portuguese. She also works on language documentation and revitalization. Her initial
work on Malacca Portuguese is archived at the Endangered Languages Archive (http://elar.soas.ac.uk/deposit/0123). More recently, she developed a mobile application, BibePortMal, a
Malacca Portuguese dictionary, in collaboration with several Malacca Portuguese speakers
(https://bibeportmal.um.edu.my).

Language Studies: At a Crossroad

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought education to a crossroad. The status quo of all levels and fields of education (including language education at the university level) that existed prior to that, was
deliberately rocked to its foundation. Almost overnight, higher education experienced a tsunami that literally caught the education fraternity off guard. Questions were raised, problems were analysed, solutions were provided, and interventions were implemented. All these happened within a short duration. Many a time, history has proven that sudden changes may result in less desirable outcomes. This session looks objectively at the past with an understanding that the knowledge and experience of the past and the very recent past (prior to the pandemic) may lead to new research areas that can contribute to an effective ecosystem and culture of language education at higher education.
