Looking for a fun, seasonal Halloween activity for your AVID class? This no-prep project has students reading two articles (with 25 haunted colleges), choosing a college to research, and creating/presenting a PowerPoint about what they have learned. In my AVID class, I have each student choose a college from the list and then become the expert on their haunted school. That way, all haunted colleges are represented. This is a fun activity for any AVID class - to look at both spooky college stories while learning important facts about a potential school to attend.

This no-prep, Google Slides PowerPoint will show AVID students how to take notes the Cornell way. This slideshow goes through the steps of taking notes, from setting up the page to writing questions to reviewing the material. On Day 1 of the lesson, students will watch a video on how to make a paper crane, take notes, review their notes, write a summary (homework), review again the next day - and then, using only their notes, will have to create a paper crane on their own on Day 2.
I used this at the beginning of the year to introduce the idea of note-taking to my students. It's always a laugh to see who carefully takes notes and can recreate the paper crane, and who cannot do it - and it helps students realize the importance of careful notetaking. This PowerPoint could also be used in ANY middle or high school classroom setting for any subject, as it is just an overview of how to take and use Cornell Notes.

Looking for an easy, fun College Elective AVID Project or Language Arts Project that students will enjoy? Try a little poetry in your classes! This no-prep Google Slides Project will allow AVID students to analyze the poem called "People Like Me" and practice writing a summary paragraph. Students will also have the chance to write their own poem as well.

When you ask your students what they want to be when the grow up - do the majority of them reply with a professional athlete? So do mine, and I always tell them that they need to have a back up plan. This no-prep, fun research project will have AVID students creating a Google Slides presentation about a scholar athlete. This project will lead them to research an athletic who graduated college, has an education outside of their sport, and will give the student a chance to reflect on how he/she is similar to the athlete. I already have a scholar-athlete list started for you to use as well.
This is a great AVID project for any grade level, or any college and career readiness class. The whole project took about a week, with the creating of the Google Slides presentation and sharing them with the class

Looking for a fun and easy, no-prep activity for your AVID or College and Career students? Try this "I Am" Poem. I am a big advocate for the use of poetry in AVID, and have found it to be a very useful tool for students to reflect on who they are. This particular poetic technique is called an "I Am" poem. The poem is a fill-in-the-blank exercise, which is great for students who don't feel confident to write a free write poem of their own. This poem is a simple and effective tool to help students really think about who they are. Many of my students have learned something new about themselves when filling in the blanks, and it left them feeling excited! Students were able to share their poems with the class after creating them as well. It was a great self-reflection, and a great teambuilding exercise.

TED TALKS are great to use in the classroom to inspire, engage, and motivate students. This bundle includes 6 Inspirational Ted Talks and Cornell Notes Graphic Organizers for each. A great filler lesson, sub plan, or even a unit like Ted Talk Tuesday! My AVID students loved the short videos, easy practice with Cornell notes, and follow up questions & discussions. These lessons can be used in ANY middle or high school classroom setting: AVID, Language Arts, Leadership, etc.

This is a Google Docs Template that can be filled out weekly, and then re-used weekly as students set their weekly SMART goals. Each week students can also check on their own progress.
