¿Cansado de sonar como un libro de texto? 🤖📖

If you are living or traveling in Mexico, you’ve probably noticed that the verbs we use in the streets don’t always match the ones in your grammar books.

“PONER” is the perfect example. It is a linguistic Swiss Army knife in Mexico. If you master these 10 expressions, your Spanish will instantly sound more authentic and natural.

Save this cheat sheet for your next conversation! 👇

🇲🇽 THE “PONER” CHEAT SHEET:

Ponerse en contacto ➡️ To get in touch / To reach out

Poner en orden ➡️ To straighten up / To get organized

Ponerse las pilas ➡️ To step it up / To get your act together

Ponerse de malas / buenas ➡️ To get in a bad / good mood

Poner mejor cara ➡️ To look on the bright side / Put on a brave face

Ponerse a dieta ➡️ To go on a diet

Poner las manos al fuego ➡️ To vouch for someone (blind trust)

Ponerse guapo/a ➡️ To dress up / To be generous (e.g., treating someone to dinner! 🇲🇽)

Ponerse p**o ➡️ To get wasted / drunk (Very casual slang!)

Ponerse bravo ➡️ To get defensive or tough (A very unique local slang from Chiapas! 🌲)

💬 Now tell me in the comments: Which of these expressions surprised you the most? Have you heard “ponerse bravo” before? I’ll read you below!

Many students say:
❌ “Soy en México”

People understand you… but it’s not natural.

The correct way is:
✅ “Estoy en México”

Because you’re talking about where you are right now.

SER = who you are
ESTAR = where/how you are now

That’s the difference between translating… and actually speaking Spanish.

💬 Where are you living right now?
📩 DM me “CLASE” if you want practical Spanish from day one.

Hi! I’m Bianca 👋

I’m a Spanish teacher and psychologist based in Mexico, and I help people feel confident speaking Spanish in real-life situations.

I work with students from different levels and backgrounds — whether you want to:
– improve your conversation skills
– understand grammar more clearly
– or feel more natural and confident when speaking

My approach combines structure, real communication, and a focus on how you actually use Spanish in everyday life.

I also support students who feel stuck, shy, or overwhelmed when speaking — because learning a language is not just about grammar, it’s also about confidence.

If you’re currently living in Mexico or learning Spanish for real-life situations, I’d love to help.

Send me a message if you’d like more information about classes or programs.

Many students say:
❌ “Soy en México”

And yes… people understand you.
But in Spanish, that’s not how we say it.

The natural way is:
✅ “Estoy en México”

Because you’re talking about:
📍 where you are right now
📆 a stage in your life
🌍 living or working abroad

SER = who you are
ESTAR = where / how you are now

This is the difference between
translating in your head
and actually speaking Spanish.

I’m Yoss, Spanish teacher for foreigners.
I help expats, digital nomads & conscious travelers
learn real-life Spanish, not just grammar.
