Can we please stop pretending solo travel is scary?
The hardest part is not the airport.
It’s not eating alone.
It’s not figuring out transportation in another country.
It’s finding your hotel room when every hallway looks exactly the same and you’re walking past the same decorative plant for the third time like it owes you answers.
As a teacher, I spend all year telling students to use context clues, follow directions, and problem-solve.
Then summer break hits and suddenly I’m standing in a resort hallway questioning my literacy, memory, and life choices.
Solo travel doesn’t scare me.
But identical hotel doors?
Diabolical.
Anyway, this is your sign to take the trip alone. You’ll figure it out. And if not, at least you’ll get your steps in. 😂✈️

Can’t tell you how many people who don’t travel told me it was dangerous to go to Mexico alone.
Which is always interesting because some people will never leave their own zip code but somehow have a whole international safety briefing ready.
I’m not saying travel doesn’t require common sense.
It does.
Pay attention.
Know where you are.
Don’t be reckless.
Listen to your gut.
Don’t act brand new in public.
But dangerous?
I come from Stockton.
My situational awareness was not downloaded at the airport. It came pre-installed.
So yes, I went to Mexico alone.
And no, I wasn’t scared.
I was prepared, aware, caffeinated, and honestly just excited to see what the world had waiting for me outside of everyone else’s fear.
Because sometimes people aren’t warning you about danger.
Sometimes they’re just telling you what they would be too afraid to do.

Summer travel season is my teacher “why”

Here’s what happened when I started solo traveling:
I stopped waiting for people who “definitely wanted to go” but somehow could never request PTO. 🌍
I learned that getting lost in another city builds more character than sitting in your apartment overthinking a text message.
I realized most adults are just exhausted middle schoolers with debit cards and opinions about airport boarding zones.
I started eating dinners alone and discovered something shocking:
peace and loneliness are cousins who wear the same outfit.
I learned how many problems disappear after a walk in a place you’ve never been before.
And as a teacher?
Solo travel made me better at my job because history finally stopped feeling like dates in a textbook and started feeling like people trying to survive life with less resources and probably worse group projects.
The cynical part?
Travel doesn’t magically heal you.
You still bring your baggage.
Sometimes literally because the airline lost it. (AGAIN 😤)
But solo travel does force you to meet yourself without the distractions.
No routine.
No audience.
No people telling you who you are.
Just you…
standing in a random airport wondering if the $9 coffee was a financial mistake.
And honestly?
That’s where a lot of growth starts. ✈️
