The wave equation is one of the most important equations in . Solutions to the wave equation are very important in fluid dynamics, but also play an important role in electromagnetism, optics, gravitational physics, and heat transfer. Let me introduce you to a French man who, first, discovered the (one dimensional) wave equation. He is our "scientist of the day" today.

It's death anniversary of , the man who believed that all truth could be derived from a single, ultimate & yet-to-be-discovered mathematical principle - -

D'Alembert was an important figure of the French Enlightenment and made contributions in physics, mathematics, philosophy, and literature. He considered mathematics the ideal form of knowledge, and the laws of physics to be the fundamental principles of the world. He believed that the physical senses to be the most reliable source of knowledge about the universe. Until 1759, he was, together with , a co-editor of the Encyclopédie (the original French encyclopedia) and contributed over one thousand articles on science and mathematics.

In 1743, he published his most famous work, Traité de dynamique, in which he developed his own laws of . In 1752, he wrote about what is now called D'Alembert's , that the drag on a body immersed in an inviscid, incompressible fluid is zero.

D'Alembert's for obtaining solutions to the wave equation is named after him. The equation is sometimes referred to as d'Alembert's equation, and the fundamental theorem of is named after d'Alembert in French.
