This , meet Ferdinando Didonna – a man who bridges caves and communities across continents. 🦇

President of the UIS Biology Commission, forestry scientist, and rural development expert, Ferdinando works with Latin American countries on environment, economics, and social development. He is also Vice President of TETIDE.ORG, Secretary of the European Cave Protection Commission (ECPC), and a member of the IUCN/WCPA Cave and Karst Working Group.

His unique perspective combines underground exploration with sustainable development – proving that cave conservation and human well-being go hand in hand.

This , meet Bärbel Vogel – a woman who has spent over 30 years bringing speleology to the global policy table 🦇

As President of the German Speleological Federation and the UIS Karst & Cave Protection Commission, Bärbel helped invent the Cave Animal of the Year campaign and the CaveLife App. Under her leadership, the VdHK gained accreditation with ECOSOC and UNEP – giving caves a voice in international policy.

In 2025, she became the NGO focal point for a landmark UNEA-7 resolution on karst ecosystems introduced by Indonesia. She also became the first speleologist involved in reviewing GEO-7 – the world's most comprehensive environmental assessment.

🎓 ¿Turismo + geociencias? Sí, y es clave para entender el karst.

En Karst Lab México creemos que ninguna ciencia sola tiene todas las respuestas. Apostamos por la complementariedad y el diálogo entre distintos sistemas de conocimiento.

Por eso tenemos una línea de trabajo de Turismo en el Karst.

¿Qué tiene que ver el turismo con las geociencias?
Esa fue la pregunta que más recibieron los estudiantes quintanarroenses que participaron en la Reunión de la Geological Society of America -Sección Cordillerana, del 21 al 24 de abril de 2026 en Loreto, B.C.S.

✨ Ellos son cuatro alumnos de la Universidad Tecnológica de Cancún quienes, junto con la Mtra. Myrna Lilí, llevaron el nombre de Quintana Roo a otro nivel.

Presentaron un análisis del turismo en el área de influencia del Sistema Sac Actún (¡sí, la cueva sumergida más larga del mundo!), recibieron preguntas de expertos en geopatrimonio, hicieron contactos internacionales y nos llenaron de orgullo.

🤝Un agradecimiento sincero a robbieschmittner por apoyar la investigación de los estudiantes brindándonos acceso a los datos más actualizados de Sac Actún.

🤝 ¡Felicidades universitari@s! El futuro del karst se construye en equipo.

🌄 Una experiencia increíble en la 122 Reunión Anual de la Geological Society of America – Sección Cordillerana, realizada en la hermosa Loreto, B.C.S.

Tuvimos la oportunidad de presentar el póster titulado "Deep Diplomacy for Caves and Karst Geoecosystems: Science, Policy and International Engagement" en colaboración con Bärbel Vogel y Ferdinando Didonna, y de compartir una sesión de presentaciones orales con colegas brillantes en el área de las geociencias en México, EEUU y Brasil. El intercambio de ideas, la retroalimentación y la energía de esta comunidad científica hicieron de este evento algo grandioso.

Un agradecimiento especial y sincero a Dupont Tyvek® por su valioso apoyo con los arreglos de viaje a Loreto. Su respaldo contribuyó a hacer posible esta experiencia.

1. Promover soluciones informadas para la gestión del karst mexicano y,
