How do you fight organized crime in Mexico? With small business loans and after-school programs.
How do you fight organized crime in Mexico? With small business loans and after-school programs
For the last six years, a little-known infusion of American tax dollars has played a part in the fight against organized crime in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juárez. Part of the money for the Merida Initiative is used to keep young people out of drug cartels and help boost the economy.

Our students were tasked with brainstorming ways to support their community's development this summer. We discussed through some awesome ideas ranging from community beautification, poverty, and product development among others. The students voted to focus this summer on hunger and financial hardships for their community development project. The students decided to construct 15 bunny hutches which will allow them and their families to maintain a bunny farm to supplement their family incomes and food supply. Here are a few pics of our students' journey.

Diana, Montserrat, Christian, and Brandon were the recipients of this summer's academic scholarships. They were each awarded between a $2,000 to $1,500 peso scholarship for their outstanding participation and efforts during our summer program. Big shoutout to the contributors of our online campaign this summer Cristian J. Foronda, Aimee Kurachi and Orlando Castillejos who partly funded these scholarships!

This summer we were able to take our students to the state university where they met some college students, learned about diferent majors and sample career paths, and were given a private tour of the university's TV station. Overall the kids were very excited and took on a newfound interest in their own educational path. Y muchas gracias a Maru Perea por su apoyo en organizando nuestro paseo!
