The University of Malawi (UNIMA), under the leadership of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samson Sajidu, is participating in the 21st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM), taking place from 1st to 5th December 2025 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) in Botswana.
The prestigious continental gathering is being jointly hosted by the Government of Botswana and RUFORUM member universities. It brings together vice-chancellors, researchers, policymakers, development partners, and industry leaders to share knowledge, foster partnerships, and shape Africaβs innovation, agricultural and food systems transformation agenda.
Through its engagement at the AGM, UNIMA is positioning itself to benefit from enhanced academic and research collaborations, increased access to competitive research funding, staff and student exchange programmes, and stronger linkages with industry and development partners.

The Centre for Resilient Agri-Food Systems (CRAFS) workshop, themed βMastering the Craft of Research Article Writing,β has commenced with 52 participants. Organised by CRAFS staff members Dr. Maurice Monjerezi and Dr. Elias Mwakilama, the workshop aims to enhance participantsβ capacity to write research articles suitable for reputable academic journals.
One of the facilitators, Professor Limbikani Matumba from the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), delivered presentations on various topics during the morning session, including strategies for writing efficiently, reasons for publishing during a Masterβs or PhD journey, types of journal publications, and the qualities of a good manuscript, among others.
The workshop will conclude on 28th October 2025 and will also feature Dr. Madalitso Chelenga from LUANAR as a facilitator.

The University of Malawi will host Professor Gregory Sankaran from the University of Bath for the 2025 UNIMA-SNAS Colloquium on Algebraic Geometry. The target audience includes postgraduate students and early-career researchers in higher education institutions.

The Food Innovation and Technology Hub (Fit-Hub) within the Center for Resilient Agri-Food Systems (CRAFS) is conducting a one-week training for its first cohort of incubatees. The training is being held at the Department of Economics buildings, where incubatees will receive training on business plan development, grant writing, regulatory and legal guidance, among other topics, and will have the opportunity to compete for seed grants to implement project milestones.

The Centre for Resilient and Agri-Food Systems, through the ACEWATER-III Project implemented by Stellenbosch University (SU) in collaboration with 20 partner institutions in the AUDA-NEPAD Network of Water Centres of Excellence and the EU Delegation to South Africa, is conducting a graduate short course on βHydro-Climate Extremes Data Analysis Using Rβ to support learning and research in critical areas of resilient agri-food systems.
The one-week short course commenced on 14th July and will conclude on 18th July 2025. It is being delivered physically and online at the Brown Chimphamba Laboratory, with participation from both local and international learners.
The course is being facilitated by staff members from the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, including Prof. Cosmo Ngongondo, Dr. Maurice Monjerezi, Dr. Elias Mwakilama, and Dr. Halima Twabi. So far, participants have learned various topics, including data transformation with dplyr, exploratory data analysis using visualization, and R fundamentals, among others.
