🎶 New Academic Pathways for Musicians: UNIMA Rolls Out Flexible Music Programmes 🎶

Lecturers from the Department of Music and Dance at the University of Malawi recently embarked on an outreach mission, visiting key music institutions across the country to orient musicians and music scholars about exciting new mature entry music programmes now on offer.

The tour included visits to Kamuzu Academy, Music Crossroads, as well as meaningful engagements with the Cultural Dance Troupe and the iconic Alleluya Band. The department is now offering three academic pathways tailored for musicians at different stages of their journey:
- 🎓 Certificate in Music – 1 year
- 🎓 Diploma in Music – 2 years
- 🎓 Bachelor of Music – 4 years

These programmes are designed with flexibility and accessibility in mind — especially for talented musicians who may not have completed traditional secondary school qualifications. According to Dr. Grant Nthala, Head of the Department, “Even those with less than an MSCE can now obtain a Certificate in Music and begin their journey toward a formal music qualification.”

The initiative has been welcomed warmly by the music community. Cos Chiwalo, of the Alleluya Band, shared his excitement:
“These programmes give new hope to many musicians who’ve been in the industry for decades but had no opportunity to upgrade. I feel young again — now I can dream. I can still think of the future of my career.”

Musicians who complete these programmes will walk away with more than just a certificate — they’ll gain what Kondwani Simbota describes as a “license for professional music practice,” opening doors to teaching, composition, and advanced performance opportunities.

This marks a new era for music education in Malawi — one where passion and talent can finally meet academic recognition.
