People may bully others in the workplace for several reasons. Bullying can include insults, humiliation, intimidation, spreading rumours, deliberately excluding someone, unfair criticism, or constantly undermining their work.
Common reasons include:
Power and control – Some people use bullying to make others feel inferior or to establish dominance.
Insecurity – A person who feels threatened by another employee's skills, popularity, or achievements may try to bring them down.
Jealousy or competition – Workplace competition can sometimes become personal, especially when promotions or recognition are involved.
Poor leadership – If managers tolerate disrespectful behaviour, bullying can become part of the workplace culture.
Personal prejudice or dislike – Someone may target a colleague because of personality differences, background, opinions, or simply because they do not get along.
Fear of being exposed – A person who is making mistakes or behaving improperly may attack someone who could expose the problem.
Learned behaviour – Some people have worked in environments where shouting, humiliation and intimidation were considered normal management techniques.
Stress and frustration – Pressure at work can contribute to aggressive behaviour, although it does not excuse bullying.
Seeking attention or status – Bullying someone can sometimes be used to make the bully appear powerful in front of colleagues.
Lack of accountability – When there are no consequences for harmful behaviour, people may continue doing it.
