Faculty of Environmental Sciences is pleased to share the research out by Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Science in corroboration with the Department of Water and Sanitation .
The findings highlight the need to strengthen ecological and livelihood resilience to ensure the sustainability of Lake Malawi's fisheries and fishing-dependent households. The study also shows the need to incorporate fishers' perceptions of climate change into policy to ensure effective indigenous responses. This study was funded by NORAD through the NORHED II Project
under the Climate Change and Ecosystems Management initiative in Malawi and Tanzania

What makes a forest operation productive, and how can its costs be managed more effectively?

These questions were at the heart of a five-day short course on productivity and cost analysis in forest operations, organised by the Department of Forestry and Environmental Management at Mzuzu University, through the Centre for Continuing Professional Development. The training brought together 14 participants from Pyxus Agriculture and Raiply Malawi Limited for a blend of classroom learning, field demonstrations, practical data collection and analysis.

Participants explored work study and time analysis, machine rates and operating costs, productivity measurement and modelling, unit costs, budgeting and operational optimisation.

Most importantly, participants had the opportunity to take their learning into the field, observe actual forest operations, work with real operational data, and use the findings to inform practical decisions.

The Department appreciates Pyxus Agriculture and Raiply Malawi Limited for their participation and commitment.

Mzuzu University remains committed to professional development and stronger links between forestry knowledge and practice. Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences Dr Russel Chidya in his opening remarks stressed the important role of capacity building in environmental sustainability.

The 8/8 Social Weekend brought Mzuzu University to life with an incredible display of energy, creativity and togetherness. Students stepped out in colourful outfits, embraced fun characters, shared endless laughter and created memories that will be cherished long after graduation.

From the vibrant costumes and face art to the genuine smiles and unforgettable moments captured throughout the day, the event reminded us that campus life is about more than academics, it's about building friendships, expressing ourselves and celebrating the diverse community that makes Mzuzu University special.

FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES HOSTS NDC 3.0 AWARENESS SESSION AND GREEN HUB INITIATIVES

The Faculty of Environmental Sciences today hosted the National Youth Network on Climate Change (NYNCC) for an awareness session on Malawi’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs 3.0) and the establishment of Green Hubs.

The event brought together students from different clubs and departments at the University, under the theme “Promoting meaningful youth participation in the implementation and monitoring of Malawi NDCs 3.0.” These included: Society of Water and Sanitation Scientists (SWASS), Fisheries Association of Mzuzu University (FISAMU), Mzuzu University Surveyors' Association (MUSA), Students of Forestry and Environmental Management (SFEM), Renewable Energy Industry Association of Malawi (RIEAMA), Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) and Mzuni LEO Club.

Speaking during the session, National Coordinator of the NYNCC Mr Dominic Nyasulu emphasized Malawi’s commitment to achieving its NDC targets through increased youth engagement, climate action awareness and the establishment of community-based Green Hubs that will serve as centers for environmental innovation, advocacy, and sustainable development.

Guest of Honour and SWASS Patron, Vincent Dzulani Banda, encouraged the students to view climate change initiatives as opportunities to actively participate in shaping a more resilient and sustainable future. He urged students and youth organizations to take leadership roles in climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, noting that meaningful youth participation is essential for the successful implementation and monitoring of Malawi’s climate commitments.

We are delighted to celebrate another outstanding research achievement by our Faculty of Environmental Sciences researchers!
📖 New Publication:
Nutritional characterization of Amaranthus spp. grain and orange-fleshed sweet potato (Ipomoea batata Lam) varieties grown in Malawi.

This important study evaluates the nutritional composition of indigenous Amaranthus grain species and orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) varieties cultivated in Malawi. The findings demonstrate that these locally available, climate-resilient crops are rich in essential nutrients, including protein, iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, provitamin A (β-carotene), and vitamin C. The research also confirms that the crops contain safe levels of antinutritional factors and heavy metals, making them promising ingredients for developing affordable, nutrient-dense complementary foods for infants and young children.

The study contributes valuable scientific evidence to support efforts aimed at improving food and nutrition security, combating child malnutrition, and promoting sustainable food systems in Malawi and beyond.

Special congratulations to our Faculty of Environmental Sciences researchers, Dr. Frank Mnthambala and Dr. Mavuto Tembo, for their significant contribution to this impactful international collaboration.

SHOWCASING RESEARCH PROGRESS AT THE FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

Today, the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, through the Department of Water and Sanitation, hosted progress presentations by students participating in the International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) program from the USA.

The students shared preliminary findings from their ongoing research on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and related environmental issues, highlighting the knowledge and experiences gained during their stay in Malawi.

As the students prepare to return to the United States next week, the Faculty commends their dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to collaborative research.

We wish all the IRES students safe travels and every success as they continue their research journey.
