The centre is excited to announce the commencement of a comprehensive fish and water quality assessment at Lake Malombe, one of Malawi's vital water bodies. The FAO and GEF funded activity I aims to gather crucial data on the ecological health of the lake, focusing on both aquatic life and water quality.

From the Department of Fisheries Research Centres of Monkey Bay and Senga Bay, experienced and esteemed experts in Fish Stock Assessment and Water Quality were carefully selected and brought together for a common goal- Fisheries Resource Monitoring

The survey aims to achieve the following
1. Monitor the health of fish populations- Fish Biomass and Diversity
2. Assess the biological, physical and chemical water parameters
3. Provide actionable insights for the sustainable management and conservation of Lake Malombe

The MCFC just finished its fisheries biodiversity mission where they have been searching for a missing Rhamphochromis spp in Nkhototaka Satellite Lakes. The initial search was conducted in September 2024 and the team wasn't successful. And wasn't successful again this time 😔

On a vibrant Sunday afternoon, November 17, 2024, the MMF Ground came alive as two powerhouses, Monkey Bay Fisheries Research Socials and Baraza Socials from Lilongwe Area 10, clashed in a match that will be remembered for its excitement and energy. It was more than a game—it was a spectacle of skill, determination, and sportsmanship.

The lush grounds of MMF provided the perfect stage for this thrilling encounter. The crowd, buzzing with anticipation, was treated to a showcase of talent and teamwork. Baraza Socials emerged triumphant with a 5-2 victory, but the true winner of the day was the spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition.

Monkey Bay Fisheries Socials displayed incredible resilience and heart. Their first goal came through Kawelokamo, with an expertly placed assist from Freka. Moments later, Zehno, seizing an opportunity, netted the second goal with Paul providing the perfect setup. These moments were a testament to their hard work and coordination on the field.

On 28 October 2023, Researcher from the Department of Fisheries commenced a joint Biomass survey with researchers from Mozambique. Within the team, there were also scientists from the University of Cambridge, Antwerp, MUST and UNIMA. The survey is expected to run for 30 days covering a total of 122 transects across the lake.

We Celebrate the World Food Safety Day!!

Ministry of Health has issued a press release for Commemoration of 2023 World Food Safety Day, with a theme is:‘Food standards save lives and the slogan being: ‘Food safety is everyone’s business’.

We must realise that food safety is key to achieving several of the Sustainable Development Goals and World Food Safety Day brings it into the spotlight, to help prevent, detect, and manage foodborne risks. Safe food contributes to economic prosperity, boosting agriculture, market access, tourism, and sustainable development. Food safety directly talks to the Sustainable Development Goals as follows:

Goal 2 - There is no food security without food safety. Ending hunger is about all people having access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food all year round.

Goal 3 - Food safety has a direct impact on people’s health and nutritional intake. Foodborne diseases are preventable.

Goal 12 - When countries strengthen their regulatory, scientific, and technological capacities to ensure that food is safe and of the expected quality throughout the food chain, they move towards more sustainable patterns of food production and consumption.

Goal 17 - A globalized world with annual food exports currently more than 5. USD 1.6 trillion and complex food systems demand international cooperation across sectors to ensure food is safe.
