Last Friday, we joined fellow farmers and other green organizations from across Malawi at the Sustainfest, where we witnessed people, ideas and solutions shaping a more sustainable future.

For us, the day was more than displaying our produce. It was an opportunity to put sustainable agriculture into conversation, sharing what we are doing, learning from fellow farmers, engaging with consumers, and connecting with organisations and individuals who share our commitment to a healthier environment and resilient communities.

The event reminded us of the value of bringing people together to exchange knowledge, celebrate local solutions and create opportunities for collaboration.

We are proud to be part of a growing movement of Malawians working to build food systems that are not only productive, but also environmentally responsible, locally rooted and sustainable for generations to come.

If we want to see meaningful and lasting action on climate change, we must invest in young people. When young people are introduced to sustainable practices early in life, they are more likely to carry that knowledge, mindset, and responsibility with them into adulthood.

As a host of the Green Girls Summer Camp, we welcomed the girls to our farm for a practical learning experience focused on climate-smart and sustainable agriculture. The visit was an opportunity to show them not only what we do, but also why we do it.

At our farm, we practice permaculture, agroecology, agroforestry, organic farming, and regenerative agriculture. We believe that this knowledge should not remain with us, but it should be shared, transferred, and put into practice by as many people as possible so that we can collectively contribute to restoring and protecting our planet.

Our team took the girls through different areas of the farm where they explored our tree nursery, maize and sorghum alley cropping system, tomato and vegetable guilds, and medicinal garden, gaining practical insights into how different plants and farming systems can work together to improve productivity, biodiversity, and ecosystem health.

The girls also learned about our water management systems, including how we harvest, store, direct, and utilise water across the farm. They were introduced to the importance of designing farm elements to perform multiple functions, a key principle of permaculture that allows us to make better use of resources while building a more resilient and sustainable farming system.

This week, Creative Solutions for the Environment is hosting a Green Girls summer camp, bringing together students from different secondary schools for an engaging and transformative learning experience.

The summer camp applies a gender-transformative approach to empower girls from rural communities, particularly those from remote villages who have had limited opportunities to travel beyond their local communities. The programme seeks to broaden their perspectives and equip them with the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to become active leaders and agents of change.

Through a combination of climate action, leadership development, educational persistence, practical learning, and urban exposure visits, the camp connects participants' rural experiences with new opportunities and possibilities for their future.

As part of the programme, the girls had the opportunity to visit LUANAR – Bunda Campus, where they were exposed to a new learning environment and gained valuable insights into higher education, career pathways, and opportunities available beyond their communities.

The Nyau community showcased their vibrant cultural heritage through traditional dances at the farm during the Permaculture Design Course (PDC) workshop hosted by Creative Solutions for the Environment and Earth Allies Restoration Network. CSE highlights the importance of understanding cultural dynamics in biodiversity conservation and building sustainable livelihoods. Nkhalango.
