Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda is remembered as Malawi’s first President and a key figure in the independence struggle. But when national commemorations become politically contested, citizens may begin asking whether such events are still uniting the country the way they were intended to.

Some now argue that Malawi should focus less on political symbolism and more on national unity and development, while others believe preserving such commemorations is important for protecting history, identity, and respect for those who shaped the nation.

At the same time, many citizens were also disturbed by the scenes of confrontation and teargas during a national commemoration — especially reports that even a former Head of State was affected.

🔎 Chifukwa Chiyani? | The Amaryllis Hotel Purchase

One goal of Chifukwa Chiyani is to simplify complex issues in economics and governance so Malawians can better understand how national decisions affect ordinary citizens.

The Amaryllis Hotel was recently purchased using funds linked to the Public Service Pension Trust Fund. Reports indicate the acquisition cost about K126.8 billion, while earlier valuations in 2023 and 2024 placed the hotel’s value at around K30–47 billion.

2️⃣ Why This Matters

The Public Service Pension Fund manages the retirement savings of Malawi’s civil servants, many of whom rely on it for their future. Decisions involving such large investments naturally attract attention because they directly affect contributors’ financial security.

3️⃣ The Questions Being Asked

Citizens and pension contributors are asking key questions about this transaction, including:

• Why was an unregistered firm used to value the property, instead of professional registered valuers?
• Why did the board initially vote not to buy the hotel, but the purchase proceeded anyway?
• How was the final purchase price determined, given the huge gap between earlier valuations and the final cost?
• What long-term returns is this investment expected to generate for contributors, and how realistic are these projections?
• Were proper oversight and risk assessments conducted before approving the deal?

Clear explanations and full disclosure strengthen public trust and protect the confidence of contributors whose retirement savings are at stake. Understanding the process ensures that such funds are managed responsibly.
