Feed: The Foundation of Livestock Production

Today we were preparing feed for chickens, a reminder that in livestock production, nutrition is one of the most important factors determining productivity, health, and profitability.

Research in animal nutrition consistently shows that feed accounts for 60–70% of the total cost of livestock production, making it both the largest investment and one of the greatest determinants of performance. Animals can only express their genetic potential when provided with balanced and adequate nutrition.

According to animal nutrition research, deficiencies or imbalances in nutrients such as energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals can lead to poor growth, reduced productivity, and increased susceptibility to diseases. Conversely, balanced rations improve animal welfare and maximize production efficiency.

As researchers have often stated:

"Genetics loads the gun, but nutrition pulls the trigger."

In other words, regardless of how good an animal's genetics are, without proper feeding, its full productive potential cannot be achieved.

Whether raising chickens, cattle, goats, sheep, or pigs, investing in good nutrition is investing in productivity and profitability.
