Building a Safer Workplace: MIE Invests in Health, Safety and Environment Training

A safe workplace is the foundation of a productive and thriving institution. To reinforce this commitment, the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) has launched a five-day Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Training Programme at its Domasi campus in Zomba.

The training has brought together staff, management, and facilitators to enhance knowledge and skills in workplace safety, environmental responsibility, hazard prevention, risk management, and emergency preparedness.

Officially opening the programme, Acting Executive Director Mr Jennings Kayira emphasized that health and safety go beyond compliance requirements and are essential to employee productivity, institutional effectiveness, and sustainability.

"We are committed to making MIE a safe place for all employees," said Mr Kayira.
He also assured staff that management remains dedicated to improving the availability and accessibility of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Regional WASH Officer Mr Schubert Zgambo Lungulera commended MIE for prioritizing employee welfare and stressed the importance of empowering employees with practical safety knowledge to reduce workplace accidents.

The initiative demonstrates MIE's continued investment in creating a safe, healthy, and resilient working environment where employees can thrive and contribute to institutional success.

MIE Recognizes Excellence: June Employe of the Month

We are thrilled to celebrate Mr. Samson Mitumbiri from the Stores Section, who has been crowned MIE’s employee of the month of June 2026.

During award presentation, Acting Executive Director, Mr Jennings Kayira emphasised MIE’s commitment to building a culture where excellence is recognized, teamwork is strengthened and performance is rewarded.
“When we celebrate excellence, we inspire excellence” said Mr Kayira. “This initiative is our way of appreciating the people behind MIE’s success while strengthening teamwork and improving productivity.

Mr Mitumbiri received a certificate of recognition, a trophy and a cash prize of MK200,000. The winner described the award as a motivation to continue serving with excellence.

Malawi Advances to Diploma and Degree-Level Primary Teacher Education

The Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Education, Madam Thokozile Banda, emphasized the importance of quality teacher preparation as Malawi advances towards diploma and degree-level primary teacher education.

Speaking at the official opening of a workshop organized by the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE), Madam Banda said educational quality depends on well-prepared teachers and highlighted the refinement of course outlines as a critical step in producing competent educators for Malawi's schools.

The workshop brought together experts from universities and teacher training colleges across the country to finalize course outlines that will guide the preparation of future diploma and degree-qualified primary school teachers.

MIE Acting Executive Director, Mr. Jennings Kayira, noted that the course outlines focus on content, pedagogy, and assessment to ensure teachers are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for modern classrooms.

This initiative reflects Malawi's commitment to strengthening teacher education and improving learning outcomes for every child.

MIE Hosts National Mathematics Curriculum Reform Master Trainers Training

Starting from 14th July, We are hosting over 200 master trainers from across Malawi who are being equipped to support Standard 1–2 teachers in delivering the reviewed mathematics curriculum. The workshop is being done in 3 phases, 1 cohort every week.

This workshop is funded by the Prevail Fund and technical support from Pamodzi Education and Chemonics International. This initiative builds on the recent training of 20 national trainers and reinforces Malawi’s commitment to strengthening education.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Acting Executive Director Mr. Jennings Kayira emphasized the importance of building teacher confidence and competence to lay a strong foundation for lifelong learning and national development.

MIE remains dedicated to providing exceptional facilities, catering, and accommodation for all stakeholders.

MIE Continues Review of Primary Teacher Education Curriculum

The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) commenced a workshop to refine course outlines for the Primary Teacher Education Curriculum at MIE, Domasi.

The current exercise builds on the first phase of the review process, which successfully refined 34 course outlines. During this workshop, participants are refining an additional 19 course outlines, bringing the total to 53 course outlines to be finalized.

Speaking during the opening session, Acting Executive Director Mr. Jennings Kayira highlighted the importance of enhancing curriculum quality, coherence, consistency, and specificity to improve learner outcomes and support Malawi’s national development goals.

He also encouraged participants to conduct a comprehensive review of the draft course outlines and develop a curriculum that is responsive to the evolving needs and priorities of the education sector.

MIE Hosts National Mathematics Curriculum Reform National Facilitators Training

From 29th June to 2nd July, we hosted the National Mathematics Curriculum Reform (NMRC) refresher training for National Facilitators.

With funding from Prevail Fund and technical support from Pamodzi Education and Chemonics International, this training is helping to revise the national mathematics curriculum for lower primary education (standards 1–4).

Beyond curriculum development, MIE offers high-quality conference facilities, catering services, and accommodation. We are committed to providing exceptional hospitality and reliable services to all our customers.

Celebrating Excellence at MIE!

The Malawi Institute of Education is proud to recognize Mr. Eric Chiwere from the Print Section as the Employee of the Month for May 2026.

MIE Concludes Review and Dissemination of Pre-Primary Pre-Pilot Curriculum Findings: Strengthening Early Childhood Education

The Malawi Institute of Education (MIE) has concluded a two-day workshop in Domasi, where curriculum specialists, research officers, and technical staff came together to review findings from the pre-pilot implementation of Malawi’s new pre-primary curriculum.

Held on 22–23 June 2026, the workshop examined evidence gathered from Nsanje, Salima, and Dedza districts. These insights will help refine teaching materials and approaches before the September piloting in 500 schools, with additional monitoring planned in 102 schools.

Participants engaged in lively discussions and technical sessions, focusing on English, Chichewa, Numeracy, and Creative Arts. They also explored stakeholders’ perceptions of P-Class, instructional materials, and learner assessment tools.

Acting Executive Director Mr. Kayira highlighted the importance of quality-based education, stressing that this initiative reflects MIE’s dedication to building strong foundations for Malawi’s children.

Together, we are shaping brighter futures and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive from their earliest years of schooling.
