Let's look at:

ESSAY WRITING SKILLS - MSCE ENGLISH LITERATURE

There are two types of essay questions:

1. Loaded essay question
For example:

The Pearl by John Steinbeck

Using eight points discuss the theme of curiosity.(20 marks)

Or

Macbeth by William Shakespeare

Using eight points discuss the theme of violence in .(20 marks)

2. Multiple essay questions.

Examples:

The Pearl by John Steinbeck

Describe the characters of the following:
(I) The pearl buyers
(ii) The trackers

Or

Macbeth by William Shakespeare

With relevant examples explain how the author has used the following:
(I) Dramatic irony
(ii) imagery

In both types, a candidate should provide eight points.

In the multiple essay question, a candidate provides four points on each - making a total of eight. For example, four points on "dramatic irony" and four points for "imagery" making eight.

Remember each point must constitute a paragraph.

APPROACHES TO ESSAY WRITING

There are three common approaches to essay writing.

We shall discuss the approaches using this question.

Discuss the theme of greed in the book "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck.

1. Character oriented approach.

Using this approach, a candidate needs to list eight characters who show greed.Remember this is a loaded question. If it was part (I) or (ii) of a multiple essay question, then one should list for characters.

You are tackling the question by looking at characters who are greedy.

2. Event-Oriented Approach

This approach explains the theme by focusing on important events or incidents in the story rather than characters alone.

The essay follows the sequence of events that develop the theme.

Structure

✓Identify a major event.
✓Explain how the event develops the theme.
✓Give supporting details

3.Mixed Approach

The mixed approach combines both characters and events in one discussion.

The writer explains:

how characters behave, and
which events reveal the theme.

This is the most common and effective approach because it gives a fuller analysis.

Structure
✓Introduce the theme.
✓Discuss characters and related events together.
✓Show how both contribute to the theme.

How to write a paragraph

Each point must be developed in its own paragraph.

We take the P*E approach.

P - present a point
E - Explain or elaborate it
E - give Example/
evidence
A sample paragraph would be:

P - Presenting a point:

The Doctor is greedy.

E - Explanation

He refuses to treat Coyotito because Kino has no money but he changes his mind and is ready to help when he hears that Kino has a precious pearl.

E - Evidence

He goes to Kino's house and offers to help.

One whole paragraph would be:

The Doctor is greedy. He refuses to treat Coyotito because Kino has no money but changes his mind and is ready to help when he hears that Kino has a precious pearl. He goes to Kino's house and offers to help. This shows that the Doctor is greedy.

Ophunzira pa sukuluyi amakhoza bwino mayeso awo mu phunziro la Chichewa chifukwa cha luso lawo mothandizana ndi aphunzitsi ena. Ngakhale atavala saikilini.

Inu nkumayesa n’zamuwanthu.

Ngakhale ali ndi akatumba ndii, alekeni;
Ngakhale ali m’mbina, adutse alekeni.
Ndi makanda osakhwima musadye.
Kukupatsani mwanapiye mungadye?

Wangokula mondokwa ngosakhwima;
Bere njo changokula, n’chimwana.
Mungamve bwa ali wanu mwana?
Ena akumuwerengetsa nyenyezi.

Tsogolo la mwana kulichititsa ngozi.

Sitikolola asanakhwime nandolo.
Athaweni akamabwera kuchokera uko.
Alekeni akadali osakhwima muubongo.
Ndi ana akuterotu athu malamulo.

Timaunika nsetso m'magawo atatu:kayalidwe ka ndakatulo, nsinjiro zachiyankhulo ndi mingoli.

1. Kayalidwe ka ndakatulo (Structure)

a) Ndime (Stanza)

Ndakatuloyi ili ndi ndime zisanu ndipo ililonse ikupereka mfundo yaikulu yolunjika ku chenjezo pa nkhanza kwa ana osakhwima.

Ndime 1: Kupereka chenjezo — “Alekeni…”.

Ndime 2 ndi 3: Kufotokoza chifukwa — ana akadali osakhwima.

Ndime 4: Kupereka chithunzithunzi choti anawo ngosakhwima (nandolo) ndi kufotokoza za ubongo.

Ndime 5: ikupereka zotsatira (chilango, chisoni).

b) Mizere (Lines)

Ili ndi mizere ya mpumulo. Mizere ikuthera pomwe maganizo akuimira.

2. Nsinjiro za chilankhulo (Figures of Speech)

a) Chiyerekezero (Metaphor)

“Tsogolo la mwana kulichititsa ngozi.” - Ana akuyerekezedwa ndi chinthu chomwe chitha kuchita ngozi

“Sitikolola asanakhwime nandolo.” Ana akuyerekezedwa ndi nandolo pomwe mawu oti “kukolora” akutanthauza kugwiritsa ntchito chinthu.

“musadye” – musachite nawo zachiwerewere

Mawu oti makanda, mwanapiye, mondokwa, nandolo(wosakhwima) ndi mawu oyererekeza ndi kuimira atsikana achichepere.

b) Mafunso achodziwadziwa/osayembekezera mayankho (Rhetorical questions)

N’nachitiranji zauchidzete chonco? Kusonyeza kudzidandaulira zinthu zitaonongeka.

“Mungamve bwa ali wanu mwana?”

“Kukupatsani mwanapiye mungadye?”
→ Kufunsa kuti awonetsetse kulakwa kwa zomwe zikuchitika.

c) Umunthu/ Personification - Kupatsa moyo zinthu zopanda moyo
“bombono mukunong’oneza” bombono latengedwa ngati munthu yemwe atha kunong’onezedwa.

d) Faniziro /Symbolism

“Mwana” → akuimira munthu wosalakwa ndi wosadziwa kanthu.

e) Chithunzithunzi/Imagery

“Misozi m’maso” → ikuonetsa kudandaula, kukhumudwa kapena kuti kuzunzika

“Kundende” → kupereka chithunzithunzi cha zotsatira zowawa za nkhaza kwa ana.

3. Mingoli (Sound Effects)

(a) Chibwereza cha liwu koyambirira (Alliteration)

“mudzangopalamulapo mulandu” → kubwereza “m” kukuthandiza kupereka mingoli yofanana.

(b) Chibwereza cha liwu pakatikati(Assonance )

“aleKenI aMenewO ndI pangOlinI” → kubwereza maliwu a “i” ndi “o” komanso ‘e’

(c) M’bwerezaliwu(Consonance)

“akumwerengetsa nyenyezi” → kubwereza mawu ngati “n” .

(d)Mvekero(Onomatopoeia– words that imitate sound)

Nsetso ndi luso lomwe mlenbi wagwiritsa ntchito pokometsera ndakatuloyi kaya nthano pogwiritsa ntchito chiyankhulo.

Timaunika nsetso m'magawo atatu:

1.Kayalidwe(structure)

Gawo loyamba la nsetso ndi lokhudza kayalidwe.

Apa timaunika:

(i) kayalidwe ka ndime(stanza structure)

✓Ndakatulo itha kulembedwa mu ndime imodzi kapena ndime zingapo.

✓Ndime (stanza) imakhala ndi mizere(lines)

Pali mitundu iwiri yamizere:

i) Ya mpumulo(end stopped lines)

Mzere umathera pomwe ganizo likutheranso.

ii) Yam'bweza(run on lines/enjambment)

Mzere umadulidwa ndi kuyamba wina kupitiriza ganizo limodzi lomwero.

2.Nsinjiro zachiyankhulo(Figures of speech/ tropes)

Gawo lachiwiri la nsetso ndi nsinjiro zachiyankhulo

Nsinjiro ndiko kugwiritsa ntchito mawu kuti apereke tanthauzo lapadera kuposera lomwe mawuwo amapereka. Mwachitsanzo mawu oti ‘nyenyezi’ kutanthauza mzimayi/mtsikana wokongola.

Nsinjiro zachiyankhulo zilipo zambiri monga:

✓umunthu(personification),
✓voko(voko) ✓ziifanifani(similes) ✓chiyerekezero(metaphor) ndi zina.

3. Mingoli (Sound effects)

Ambiri amasokoneza zinthu zitatuzi. Kayalidwe, nsinjiro zachiyankhulo ndi mingoli. Zonsezi pamodzi zimatchedwa nsetso. Ndipo zonsezi pamodzi ndi zida kapena zipangizo (literary Devices).

Tatha kuona kuti alliteration is not a figure of speech. It is a sound effect, it is a poetic device just like a simile is figure of speech, it is a poetic device but it is not a sound effect.

This time we are going to look at SENTENCE TRANSFORMATION

Objectives

General objective

You should be able to transform sentences in various ways in various contexts.

Specific objectives

By the end of this topic, you must be able to:

✓Define sentence transformation

✓Explain the importance of sentence transformation.

✓Describe types of sentence transformations

Sentence transformation is the process of changing the form or structure of a sentence without changing its original meaning.

In other words, you express the same idea in a different grammatical way. This is also called paraphrasing.

Importance of sentence transformation

✓It improves grammar skills
✓It helps in writing variety
✓It is common in examinations
✓It strengthens understanding of sentence structure

Types of Sentence Transformation

The following are the common types:

✓Changing connectors

Although he was tired, he worked hard.

Despite being tired, he worked hard.

✓Active ↔ Passive voice

The teacher marked the books.

The books were marked by the teacher.

✓Direct ↔ Indirect speech

She said, “I am happy.”

She said that she was happy.

✓Affirmative ↔ Negative

He is always late.

He is never on time.

✓Simple ↔ Complex ↔ Compound

He was tired but he continued working.

Although he was tired, he continued working.

EXERCISE

1.Define sentence transformation.

2.Explain the importance of sentence transformation.

3. Describe any 3 types of sentence transformation.

Below is a dialogue between a teacher and a student. Read it and appreciate various ways of transforming sentences:

Teacher: After he finished his work, John left the office. How can we change this?

Student: Having finished his work, John left the office.

Teacher: Good. Now: As soon as he reached home, it started raining.

Student: No sooner had he reached home than it started raining.

Teacher: Excellent. Next: Because of the heavy rain, he could not go out again.

Student: Owing to the heavy rain, he could not go out again.

Teacher: Well done. Try this: Although he was tired, he decided to cook.

Student: Regardless of his tiredness, he decided to cook.

Teacher: Finally: As soon as he began resting, he remembered his tasks.

Student: Hardly had he begun resting when he remembered his tasks.

That's it.

I am Joseph Tcha Makunganya, an experienced teacher and writer with a passion for helping learners improve their communication skills for academic, professional, and everyday use. I have published several books with different publishing houses such as CLAIM MABUKU and Montfort press. These books are used in the current curriculum in Malawi. Additionally, I had a privilege to work as a tutor at Domasi College of Education, and University of Malawi (Chancellor College).
