Southern parts of Malawi are to receive heavy rains influenced by Cyclone Freddy, from Friday this week, experts have said.

In its latest update, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services says, Freddy, which is currently classified as Severe Tropical Storm continues to intensify in the
Mozambique channel.

Meanwhile, the Tropical storm has turned towards West and is later expected to take the northwesterly trajectory moving at a speed of 7km/h heading towards Mozambique.

"Projections maintain a very high chance that FREDDY will return and make a second landfall over Mozambique by Friday. The exact landing position is not certain but is likely to be between Beira and Nampula," reads part of the statement.

However, according to the department, projections have also indicated chances of the cyclone moving towards Southern part of Malawi, in the process, enhancing rainfall activities in the region from Friday. # malawi

The High Court in Zomba has dismissed an application by the Attorney General's office to quash a judicial review of a case restraining Rastafarian children from wearing dreadlocks in school.

Judge Zione Ntaba questioned the wisdom of the Attorney General (AG) office by bringing an objection at a very late stage.

Ntaba said she was shocked that the AG’s office could be careless with cases human rights, primarily when the claimants are children.

"The Attorney General's office should understand its mandate. The way it is approaching this matter leaves a lot to be desired." Charged Ntaba.

An interlocutory injunction was granted by Judge Ntaba restraining government from stopping dreadlocked students in 2020. The case which commenced in 2017 is being supported by Center for Human Rights and Assistance, Women Lawyers Association and Southern Region Litigation Center.
