Congratulatory Message from Ambassador Gong Qing of China to Malawi on the International Chinese Language Day Event.
Presented by professor Wei Bian and translated by Dr Mfune
On the occasion of the 2026 International Chinese Language Day, I would like to extend my sincere greetings and best wishes to all friends who care about, support, and actively participate in learning the Chinese language.
The year 2026 marks the Year of China-Africa People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges, as well as the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Africa. President Xi Jinping, together with leaders of African countries, has jointly built a great vision of a China-Africa community with a shared future in the new era.
Language is the carrier of culture. Friendly exchanges and cooperation between China and Africa cannot be separated from cultural interaction, which adds warmth and emotion to bilateral relations, and enhances resilience and trust. The Chinese language embodies thousands of years of cultural wisdom of the Chinese nation and is an important public cultural heritage that China offers to the world.
With the joint efforts of the Confucius Institute at the University of Malawi and people from all sectors in Malawi, from Lilongwe to Blantyre, from Lake Malawi to Mount Mulanje, more and more young people are picking up Chinese textbooks. With each “Ni Hao,” they open new doors to the world and embark on a journey of cultural exchange and mutual learning with China.
I am pleased to note that over the past ten years since its establishment, the Confucius Institute at the University of Malawi has set up 22 teaching centers and provided Chinese language education to 6,000 students. Activities such as Chinese Corner competitions, Chinese song contests, and International Chinese Language Day celebrations have inspired more Malawian friends to fall in love with Chinese culture and China. They actively contribute to bilateral friendship associations, fostering closer people-to-people ties and promoting cultural exchange, each making their own unique contribution.
As the saying goes, “True friendship knows no distance; even thousands of miles apart, we are still neighbors.” I believe that within the vibrant atmosphere of the China-Africa Year of Cultural Exchange, more Malawian friends will enthusiastically join the ranks of those learning Chinese culture. In this wave of people-to-people exchange, we will surely create a new chapter marked by harmony in diversity and inclusiveness.
Finally, I wish this International Chinese Language Day event great success. May everyone find joy in learning Chinese, gain knowledge, deepen friendships, and work together to contribute to the friendship between China and Malawi.
