WHAT MOST BUSINESS OWNERS IN MALAWI DON'T KNOW
There is a certain famous bus company in Malawi.
We will call it ABC Bus Company for anonymity.
The ABC Bus Company has a good business reputation. It is fast, reliable and mostly on time. To top it off, it has a great booking system that makes payment for bus tickets easy through mobile money platforms like Airtel Money, TNM Mpamba and mo626.
If you visit their website you can make enquiries through their contacts which can be found there and can make your booking in the comfort of your home.
However, there is one challenge.
If you call their contacts past 5pm alas, you cannot make a booking. You will have to wait for the next day when they open their landlines for business.
This was my story. I really wanted to be able to book a return ticket to Lilongwe but couldnt because their system was limited. I can understand why too. Its not like they dont want to make business. It's just that they cant manage to keep up with enquiries throughout the night.
The irony is, both me the customer and them the service provider lose out in the end. I fail to secure a seat to travel. They fail to acquire a passenger and end up making a trip with the bus not filled at full capacity.
That is when I realised that there are many businesses that lose money just like this.
Most businesses in Malawi both big and small fail to harness the power of automation.
They don't know that it is possible to set up systems that work on your behalf whilst you sleep.
Did you know that it is possible to have people pay for your service, be emailed a receipt and even be informed if the option they have chosen is not viable whilst you sleep?
It is possible to wake up and simply go through trasanctions that have happened through the night and get back to your customers when you are ready to do so and it doesn't need advanced technology.
