Zodiak has established that a shortage of special needs teachers remains a major challenge in providing quality education to learners with disabilities in Mulanje, with only 34 trained teachers serving 5,357 primary school learners with disabilities.

Speaking to Zodiak Online, Mulanje District Special Needs Education Coordinator F***y Nambesa said improving education for learners with disabilities remains difficult as many trained teachers leave after attaining higher qualifications.

Nambesa said the district is also facing a shortage of teaching and learning materials for learners with disabilities, as the equipment is costly compared to funding allocated to the Special Needs Education section.

Meanwhile, disability rights advocate Stuart Chauluka has urged government to introduce special needs education training in teacher training colleges to equip all teachers with skills to support learners with disabilities.
