Sunday Art day:Nyanja Art Studio

Andrew Hastings Chodola was born in Blantyre and did his secondary education at Blantyre secondary school in early 90’s after attending various primary schools in Lilongwe, where he grew up.

Soon after leaving school, he worked as a sign writer for two to***co processing companies in Lilongwe until 1997 when he finally left to become a full time freelance artist. Through his persistent personal studies in art, he has become a skillful painter , becoming more and more well known.

He started drawing at a young age and is totally self-taught. His formidable talent and prolific output have won recognition and are continually drawing large audiences. His original pencil drawings and oil paintings hang in many places all over the world.

In 2008 ,he received two awards of excellence presented by the Vice President of Malawi, justice malewazi ,one for overall best art and one for best artworks from Art House Africa,a local art firm based in Lilongwe.In February 2014 he received his third award for best visual artist from the life of Youth creative organisation, which was presented by the Minister of Tourism and culture and very recently was awarded artist of the Decade by Art House Africa.

He has participated in over fifty exhibitions over the past twenty years in Malawi , the United kingdom, and in the USA . Over the years he has been able to train some upcoming artists including William Mwale , Innocent Bakali, Dennis Mpira and his two brothers.

Following his successes he has received commissions from UNICEF, UNC project, Barlor Foundation, Catholic Relief Services, and has recently concentrated on portrait commissions out of which he has been able to receive Portrait commissions from as far as the queen of Bahrain and major Malawian companies, like La farge Malawi , total Malawi, standard bank , mwaiwathu hospital and many others.

Andrews work can been seen on display for sale at all major galleries in Malawi and at his art studio in Lilongwe.

Nature Saturday: Lake Chilwa

Lake Chilwa is the second-largest lake in Malawi after Lake Malawi and one of the country’s most important natural ecosystems. Located in the eastern part of Zomba District near the border with Mozambique, the shallow, endorheic lake stretches approximately 60 kilometres long and 40 kilometres wide. Surrounded by vast wetlands, floodplains and marshes, Lake Chilwa supports thousands of people through fishing, farming and bird-related tourism. At the centre of the lake lies Chisi Island, a culturally significant island known for its ancient baobab trees, traditional communities and rich birdlife.

Unlike Lake Malawi, Lake Chilwa has no outlet, meaning its water levels depend entirely on seasonal rainfall and evaporation. During periods of drought the lake can shrink dramatically, and in 1968 it completely dried up following exceptionally severe dry conditions. Because of its shallow depth and sensitivity to climate change, Lake Chilwa remains one of the most environmentally vulnerable regions in Malawi.

The lake basin is internationally recognised for its ecological importance. In 1997, Lake Chilwa became Malawi’s first Ramsar Site, a Wetland of International Importance, due to its remarkable biodiversity and role as a habitat for migratory and resident bird species. The wetlands attract huge populations of flamingos, pelicans, herons and the rare black egret, while Chisi Island’s towering baobabs provide nesting sites for trumpeter hornbills, fish eagles and several species of snake eagles. The lake also supports a variety of fish species that are vital to local livelihoods and food security.

Conservation and sustainable development projects have played a major role in protecting the lake and surrounding wetlands.

Lake Chilwa remains both an environmental treasure and a lifeline for surrounding communities, balancing ecological significance with the daily livelihoods of the people who depend upon its waters and wetlands.

Sunday Art day: Charles Levison

Charles Levison is an impressionistic Malawian fine artist, he is based in Lilongwe where he works as an art teacher at Lilongwe private school.

Most of his works are water scenes, he is fascinated with water as he grew up in Mangochi, along lake Malawi.
His works are found in most Malawian art galleries. Meanwhile he doesn`t have physical location to view his artworks

Sunday Art day: Annemarie Quinn

Whilst living in Malawi, Annemarie also worked as Arts Programmes Director at The Jacaranda School For Orphans funded by Madonna’s charity Raising Malawi. Annemarie co-founded the NGO Music Against Malaria.

Raising funds for health care whilst preserving the cultural heritage of Malawi.

Performed regularly at venues and festivals across the country including Malawi’s largest music festival Lake Of Stars and Tumaini Festival in Dezleka Refugee Camp.

UN adopts new world map

The United Nations General Assembly voted by an overwhelming majority on Friday, September 4, 2026, to adopt a new world map that accurately represents the true size of Africa. The historic resolution was supported by 164 countries. With this decision, the UN is officially moving away from the traditional 16th-century Mercator projection and embracing the more accurate Equal Earth projection. The Equal Earth projection is important because it shows the continents and countries in their most accurate relative sizes.
In the new map Africa is bigger and Nort America and Europe smaller.
