Queen Elizabeth College is popularly known on the island for its excellent academic success and producing a high number of scholarship holders at national level for excelling at the Cambridge A-level International examinations. It has, since its foundation in 1951, produced many eminent figures, established its reputation of one of the island's leading schools and contributed to the intellectual and cultural life of Mauritius. The school was named after Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 and had the honour of hosting a visit from Her Majesty in the 1970s. Queen Elizabeth College is considered to be one of the best public schools for females in Mauritius based on not only its high academic standards but also its cultural and personal experiences that it provides to its students. In 2002, QEC celebrated its 50th anniversary and over the years, it has not ceased to provide an invigorating intellectual climate in which students and staff, in both the sciences and the arts, are actively involved in adding value and contributing to the growing body of knowledge that the institution produces. In addition, many students from QEC are known to excel in many areas of life and tend to become exceptional university graduates and professionals thereafter. History
Founded in 1950,the QEC is renowned for nurturing hard work enhanced by a mutuality of respect and care in young students. It was under the rectorship of Mrs Maya Balgobin that classes were called after precious stones and gems instead of the traditional 'A, B, C, D', namely, Beryl, Garnet, Jade, and Onyx. She also changed the school badge to a metal material with a crown representation on it with the permission of Buckingham. The four sports houses of the QEC have been named after female personalities in history, namely Pankhurst, Nightingale, Curie and Fry. The Uniform
The prestigious QEC uniform is unique and easily distinguished. It consists of a white blouse and dark green tunic buttoned at the front. QEC students have traditionally been associated with the Cateau Vert, a typical Mauritian bird, due to the white and green uniform.
