THE BIRTH OF THE PROPHET ﷺ :
EVIDENCE FOR THE 12TH OF RABI' AL-AWWAL

Muslims worldwide commemorate the birth of the Prophet ﷺ on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal each year, a date recognized as a public holiday in most Muslim-majority countries. While this occasion is meant to be a period of joy and unity, debate often arises regarding many aspects of the commemoration. Unfortunately, some individuals use this occasion to stir confusion and controversy among their fellow Muslims. One major point of discussion is on the specific date namely the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal itself—whether any authentic evidence confirms that the Prophet ﷺ was born on this date. I decided to write this brief article after receiving numerous questions regarding this issue.

In fact, there is an authentic narration (Athar) from two noble companions of the Prophet ﷺ, Jābir ibn ‘Abdillāh and ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (radiyallāhu ‘anhum), explicitly stating that the Prophet ﷺ was born on the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal. The following is the Athar with its authentic (Sahīh) chain of narration:
Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn Tāhir ibn ‘Ali al-Hāfidh informed us, Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad informed us, saying: ‘Isā ibn ‘Ali ibn ‘Ali ibn ‘Isā narrated to us by dictation, saying: Abu al-Qāsim ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azīz al-Baghawi narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, saying: ‘Affān narrated to us, from Sālim ibn Hayyān, from Sa’īd ibn Mīnā, from Jābir ibn ‘Abdillāh al-Ansāri and ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās, both of whom said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was born in the Year of the Elephant, on Monday, the twelfth of the month of Rabi’ al-Awwal; on it [Monday] he was sent with the revelation, on it he ascended to the heavens, on it he migrated, and on it he passed away ﷺ.”

It has been narrated by al-Jawraqāni in his book “Al-Abāṭīl wa al-Manākīr wa as-Siḥāḥ wa al-Mashāhīr” 1/267 (122). Its chain is undeniably Sahīh.
Shaykh Muhammad Rizq Tarhuni writes, “A period of time after writing this, Allah bestowed upon me a blessing for which I cannot thank Him enough: I came across the Hadith of Ibn ‘Abbās and Jābir recorded by Al-Jawraqāni in his book “Al-Abāṭīl wa al-Manākīr wa as-Siḥāḥ wa al-Mashāhīr” (1/126). It is transmitted through a chain composed entirely of Hadith Huffādh back to Ibn Abi Shaybah with his chains to both of them, including Sulaym ibn Hayyān—just as I previously preferred. Thus, the narration is established according to the standards of Al-Bukhāri.” _[As-Sīrah adh-Dhahabiyyah 1/276]_

This narration (Athar) has been cited by many other Hadith scholars in their works, including Ibn Kathīr, Ibn Nāsir ad-Dīn ad-Dimashqi, As-Sālihi ash-Shāmi, and Al-Bannā as-Sā’āti. _[See respectively: Ibn Kathīr, As-Sīrah an-Nabawiyyah 1/199, Ad-Dimashqi, Jāmi’ al-Athār 2/761, As-Sālihi, Subul al-Huda wa ar-Rashād 1/334 and Al-Bannā, Bulugh al-Amāni 20/189]_

The opinion of the Prophet's ﷺ companions on an issue where independent reasoning (Ijtihād) has no place is considered as a binding proof according to the vast majority of scholars. _[See for example: Al-Haskafi, Ifāda al-Anwār 236, Al-Khabbāzi, Al-Mughni 266, Al-Futuhi, Sharh al-Kawkab al-Munīr 3/375, Al-Iji, Sharh Mukhtasar Ibn Hājib 2/287, Ash-Shīrāzi, Sharh al-Luma’ 2/750 and others]_

Furthermore, according to the vast majority of scholars, the most widely accepted date for the Prophet’s ﷺ birth is the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal. This date has been favoured by over fifty prominent scholars throughout Islamic history in their works, including several early righteous predecessors (Salaf as-Sālihīn) like Sa’īd ibn al-Musayyib, Ibn Is-hāq, Ma’ruf ibn Kharrabudh al-Makki, Abu Ma’shar Najīh as-Sindi al-Madani, Ibn Hishām, At-Tabari, Ibn Hibbān, Abi Zayd al-Qayrawāni, Al-Hākim, Al-Bayhaqi and many others. _[See for example: At-Tabari, Tārikh al-Umam 1/453, Al-Hākim, Al-Mustadrak 4182, Al-Bayhaqi, Dalāil an-Nubuwwah 1/74, Ibn Asākir, Tārikh Dimashq 3/70, Adh-Dhahabi, Tārikh al-Islām 1/25, Ibn Hishām, As-Sīrah 1/58, Ibn Hibbān, As-Sīrah 1/33, Al-Qanāzi’i, Tafsir al-Muwatta 1/229 and many others]_

Moreover, prominent scholars such as Ibn Jazzār, Ibn al-Jawzi, and At-Tībi recorded a consensus (Ijma’) regarding this date. _[See for example: Mughaltāi, Al-Ishāra 56, Ad-Dimashqi, Jāmi’ al-Athār 2/761, Az-Zurqāni, Sharh al-Mawāhib 1/248 and Ad-Dihlawi, Ma Thabata min as-Sunnah 75]_

It is worth noting that Shaykh Muhammad Tāhir al-Kurdi refuted astronomers who claimed a different birth date for the Prophet ﷺ, presenting solid scientific evidence that confirms his birth was on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal _[Refer: At-Tārikh al-Qawīm 1/256-264]_

The position that the Prophet ﷺ was born on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal is anchored in an authentic narration (Athar) from the noble Companions Jābir ibn ‘Abdillāh and ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (radiyallāhu ‘anhum). Because such historical matters are not open to personal reasoning (Ijtihād), their testimony carries binding weight among the vast majority of scholars. In addition, this date is substantiated by most of the scholars of this Ummah.

And Allah knows best

The Scholar's Wealth and Spiritual Peril

Imam az-Zamakhsharī (rahimahullah) said:

"One of the most dangerous misfortunes is when a scholar lives off the wealth of unjust rulers, taking their gifts and support. This corrupts and stains him, no matter how much he tries to excuse or conceal it. The reality is plain and undeniable, yet he still attempts to cover it up. Therefore, you must be mindful of Allah in your livelihood, and be cautious in the sources from which you sustain yourself. For what you consume directly affects your thoughts, your spiritual state, and ultimately determines your share in Paradise or Hell."

Rabi'ul Awwal in the Lives of the Sahabah

The Beginning of the Islamic Calendar

The Islamic calendar is a symbol of the Muslim Ummah's identity and history. It is based on the lunar cycle and consists of twelve months. The calendar used by Muslims today was formally established during the Khilafah of Sayyiduna Umar (radiyallahu anhu) in the month of Rabi'ul Awwal 17 A.H., after the Sahabah (radiyallahu 'anhum) consulted regarding the need for a structured timeline.

Before this, different nations and peoples had used major events as points of reference for their calendars, such as the descent of Nabiy Adam ('alayhis salam), the coming of Nabiy Nuh ('alayhis salam), the great flood, the fire of Nabiy Ibrahim ('alayhis salam), the construction of the Ka'bah, the death of Kab ibn Lu'ayy, and the Year of the Elephant. Ultimately, Muslims established their calendar around a major turning point: the Hijrah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

The Need for an Islamic Calendar

During the Khilafah of Sayyiduna Umar (radiyallahu 'anhu), the need for a proper system of dating became apparent. A document concerning a legal deed was once brought before Sayyiduna Umar (radiyallahu 'anhu), in which repayment was stated to be due in Sha'ban. He asked, "Which Sha'ban? The past Sha'ban, the present Sha'ban or the coming Sha'ban?"

Realising that the absence of a calendar could lead to confusion in matters such as debts and transactions, Sayyiduna Umar (radiyallahu 'anhu) gathered the Sahabah (radiyallahu 'anhum) and consulted them regarding the establishment of an Islamic calendar.
Various suggestions were put forward. Some suggested adopting the system of the Persians, who dated their years according to their kings, while others suggested following the system of the Romans. These suggestions were not accepted.

The Sahabah (radiyallahu 'anhum) then discussed which major event from the life of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) should mark the beginning of the Islamic calendar. Suggestions included his birth, the beginning of his prophethood, his Hijrah and his demise (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

The Hijrah was chosen in the end because it was a clear, well-known event that openly separated truth from falsehood. It marked the exact moment Muslims went from being persecuted to building their own community in Madinah Munawwarah.

Other options like the birth, demise and prophethood of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) were not selected, since the exact years of the Prophet's (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) birth and the start of his prophethood were matters of differing opinions. On the other hand, starting the calendar with his passing would only bring sad and painful memories to the Ummah every single year.

Choosing the First Month of the Calendar

Although the Hijrah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) took place in Rabi’ul Awwal, the Sahabah (radiyallahu 'anhum) chose Muharram as the first month of the Islamic year.
Various suggestions were made regarding the first month, including Rajab and Ramadan. However, the Sahabah (radiyallahu 'anhum) ultimately settled on Muharram, following the mashura of Sayyiduna Uthman (radiyallahu 'anhu).

Muharram was suitable because it is a sacred month and follows Dhul Hijjah, the month in which the Hajj takes place. The Hajis return from Hajj during this period, making it a natural beginning for the year. Although Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) migrated in Rabi’ul Awwal, the initial resolve and preparations for the Hijrah began in Muharram. The pledges which preceded the Hijrah took place in Dhul Hijjah, making Muharram the first month to begin after the decision and preparations for the migration.

The establishment of the Islamic calendar was therefore not merely the introduction of a method for recording dates. It was a reminder of the sacrifices offered for the sake of Islam. Every time a Muslim dates an event according to the Hijri calendar, he is reminded of the Hijrah and the sacrifices made by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) and his Sahabah (radiyallahu 'anhum) for the sake of Allah Ta'ala.

Other Occurences in Rabi'ul Awwal

(a) Marriage of Sayyiduna Uthman (radiyallahu 'anhu) to Sayyidah Ummu Kulthum (radiyallahu 'anha)- In Rabi’ul Awwal of the third year after Hijrah, Sayyiduna Uthman ibn Affan (radiyallahu 'anhu) married Sayyidah Ummu Kulthum (radiyallahu 'anha), the daughter of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). She was the sister of Sayyidah Ruqayyah (radiyallahu 'anha), whom Sayyiduna Uthman (radiyallahu 'anhu) had previously married.

After Sayyidah Ruqayyah (radiyallahu 'anha) passed away, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said to Sayyiduna Uthman (radiyallahu 'anhu), “O Uthman, Jibril has just told me that Allah has married Ummu Kulthum to you, with the same dowry as Ruqayyah, and for the same companionship."

This marriage further demonstrated his lofty position. Sayyiduna Uthman (radiyallahu 'anhu) was therefore honoured with the title Dhun Nurayn, the possessor of two lights, as he married two daughters of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).

(b) Expansion of Masjidun Nabawiy - During his Khilafah in the 29th year after Hijrah, Sayyiduna Uthman (radiyallahu 'anhu) also expanded Masjidun Nabawiy in Rabi’ul Awwal. He constructed it with stone and strengthened its pillars, enlarging the Masjid to accommodate the increasing number of Musallis.

Lessons

(a) The establishment of the Islamic calendar teaches us the importance of Mashura in making decisions.

(b) The Hijrah is a constant reminder of sacrifice for the sake of Din and the sacrifices made by Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) and the Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum).

(c) The Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) showed that Islam has its own identity and way, and Muslims do not need to adopt the ways and customs of the Kuffar.
