HSC: ULTRASOUND
Explain the principles of the generation of ultrasonic waves using piezo-electric transducer.
1. A quartz is used to produce an ultrasound.
2. Opposite faces act as electrodes.
3. Centres of (+) and (–) charge are not coincident.
4. A potential difference across crystal causes crystal to change shape.
5. An alternating voltage is applied across the crystal.
6. It causes crystal to oscillate at resonant frequency.

HSC
Explain using the principle of superposition formation of stationary wave:
1) Incident wave reflects on a hard surface.
2) Incident and reflected waves travelling in opposite direction overlap.
3) Both waves have same frequency.
4) The resultant displacement is the sum of displacements of each wave.
5) Nodes and antinodes are produced.

Explain why an e.m.f. is induced. [3 marks]
The coil is between magnetic field of N and S poles. The coil rotates and cuts magnetic field lines. The magnetic flux linkage changes continuously.
