As you are already aware, Sania Bibi Khodabux is the first female laureate of the Royal College Curepipe (RCC); a landmark moment for an institution that, for over two centuries, was known as an all-boys school before recently becoming co-educational.

On this occasion, we are sharing the image of an early 20th-century prize book cover awarded to a student of the Royal College (shared by one of his relatives). Such books were traditionally given as academic prizes and often bore the insignia of the Royal College of Mauritius.

One detail may raise questions: the inscription “Higher Education of Girls”.

It is important to clarify that this wording does not indicate that Royal College Curepipe ever had a girls’ section or admitted female students at that time.

In the colonial context of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the expression “Higher Education of Girls” referred to a general administrative and educational category, used by the authorities to describe policies, examinations, grants or awards linked to the promotion of girls’ education across the colony, not to enrolment at the Royal College itself.

This document therefore reflects the rich heritage of the Royal College, the long evolution of education in Mauritius, and the journey that brings us to today, where a former student of Seewa Bapoo College becomes the first female laureate of RCC.

History continues to be written, and sometimes the symbols of the past take on new meaning in the light of the present.

Congratulations to Sania Bibi Khodabux on this outstanding achievement.
