🌱⚡Disruptive Technology of the Day: Digital Farming
🧑🌾What is Digital Farming?
Digital farming can be defined as the use of advanced technologies, such Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data Analytics, and IoT, along with devices including drones, smart crop sensors, and automatic systems to monitor the utilisation of crops, fertiliser, pesticides, and water to maximise yields for farmers.
The rapid growth of smart agriculture and the digital farming industry can be attributed to factors such as the rising food demand due to the increasing global population, as well as labour shortages which are creating a need for autonomous farming equipment.
Digital farming aims to reduce environmental impact and increase the use sustainable agricultural practices. By utilising cutting-edge technology, farmers can make more precise and data-driven decisions.
🌾🚜Impact on Drone Deployment, Building and Equipment Management and Crop Monitoring:
Drone Deployment - The next generation of drones has the ability to survey crops and herds over vast areas quickly and efficiently and could act as a relay system for transferring real-time data to other connected equipment and installations. Drones also could use computer vision to analyse field conditions and deliver precise applications of fertilisers, nutrients, and pesticides to where crops most need them.
Building and Equipment Management – Sensors are used to monitor and measure silo and warehouse storage levels and could trigger automated reordering. Similar tools could improve the shelf life of inputs and reduce post-harvest losses. Computer vision and sensors attached to equipment and connected to predictive-maintenance systems could additionally decrease repair costs and extend machinery and equipment life.
Crop Monitoring - Sensors could deliver imagery from remote corners of fields to assist farmers in making more informed and timely decisions by receiving early warnings of problems like disease or pests. Smart monitoring could also help farmers monitor crops for quality characteristics such as sugar content and fruit colour to help farmers maximise crop revenue.
