Success Through Teamwork: Arielle Bonnici Completes Her Best 5km Yet!
We congratulate Arielle Bonnici on completing her fourth 5km race – and doing so without any walking breaks or stops, with a new personal best time! 🚀✨
Alongside her is Simon Cilia, who has been working closely with me for over 7 months to provide Arielle with the best possible support and guidance in her Paralympic running journey. Thanks to ongoing communication between Arielle, Simon, the Paralympic Committee, and myself, we can precisely document and tailor her daily training.
Arielle is very attentive to every detail herself, which allows Simon and me to plan her training and recovery with great accuracy. The result: an athlete who, just a year ago, could barely walk and has spent much of her life in a wheelchair, now running in 44:53 minutes as a double amputee!
She is also currently training with Tyron, who emphasizes the importance of small but crucial steps. Only a solid and healthy foundation can lead to continuous progress.
We are incredibly proud of Arielle and look forward to her future successes!

Getting up Tuesday morning at 4:30 a.m., outside it's dark, windy, and the chances of rain are high. Before heading to Salina Beach, I quickly looked for a parking spot to avoid getting a ticket for illegal parking—about 30 minutes before start time. The water temperature in Malta was around 15-16°C; the wetsuit covered everything important, but my face and head immediately registered cold pain. After nearly 13 minutes in the water, in the front pack of the top 10 athletes, the transition to the bike went smoothly and quickly—just getting my feet into the bike shoes took a few minutes, as my fingers were numb from wind and water.
The headwind on the way back, combined with uphill sections, was really intense—there's no better way to simulate this in training. But from the third lap, I found my rhythm because, in a sprint distance triathlon, there's only one rule: go all out! Thanks to my mentor Keith Galea, who has been supporting me for two years with running technique and performance, the transition to running was very smooth and effortless.
The 20 km bike course was a tough battle—10 km against wind and elevation, which was noticeable in the last 2 km of the run. That's what makes a simple triathlon on a day like this: pushing your body and mind beyond your limits, no matter how hard and painful it gets. That’s when your true self shows up.
In triathlon, there are no shortcuts—full throttle or nothing. Those who finish successfully carry a smile and a sense of self-worth. Later, I heard about Liam Daly from Gozo, who was injured in a bike crash—I hope it's not too serious and wish him a quick recovery!
Respect to all competitors finishing under these conditions—you are amazing! 💪🏅

Yesterday, two incredible para-athletes took part in the Corsa Run competition, and I couldn’t be more proud. Arielle Bonnici, who’s now participated in the 5K race three times, gets coached by Simon Cilia and myself. The race from Paola to Birgu was especially meaningful for her, with challenging uphill and downhill sections in the last two kilometers. If the surface of the concrete slabs hadn’t been so smooth at the end to give her runner blades better grip, she might have achieved an even faster time.
Tyron Lloyd Baron, who I’ve been coaching in strength and conditioning since the end of January, completed the 10K in 54:08 minutes. This is a solid foundation as we continue to work towards the next 10K and push our limits further.
My biggest respect goes to both of you. Your attitude, dedication, and attention to the small but crucial details are truly inspiring. No excuses—only decisions to grow and improve.
Thank you for trusting me on this journey. Keep pushing forward!

🎉 1:16:56 – Personal best time in my duathlon on Gozo! 🏅🌞
Fortunately, there was no rain at the time of the race and the sun was shining – perfect conditions! ☀️ This race was especially important to me as it was a great preparation for my first triathlon of the year.
Thanks to a great nutrition tip tailored to my needs and coordinated training with Keith Galea, I can feel my fitness slowly and healthily improving. 💪🚴♂️🏃♂️
Looking forward to the next challenges! 🚀

🌟 My Perfect Duathlon Moment 🌟
Yesterday’s race was one of the most beautiful and best-paced duathlons I’ve ever completed. After finishing my last Olympic-distance race in Malta in 2024 with a personal best, I had to take a step back in 2025 due to personal and professional reasons. Still, I kept training daily—focusing on strength, technique, nutrition, and recovery—and discovered my own best version.
Today, I experienced a race that truly fulfilled me. In the photo, on my left is Charles Camilleri, who will turn 59 this year. Huge respect for his lifestyle and vitality. On my right is Steve Seguna, with whom I had an intense head-to-head battle from start to finish.
I’m so grateful that I could enjoy every moment of this race—equipment, body, mind—all working perfectly. I pushed beyond my limits, feeling great, because I was well-prepared over the past months. It was an experience full of joy, self-overcoming, and community.
Big thanks to Charles, Steve, and all the athletes sharing the course today—you motivated me to push even further. For me, duathlon, triathlon, and aquathlon are not just sports—they’re a way to challenge ourselves and have fun, health, and growth.
Looking forward to 2026 and beyond—more challenges, more community, more growth!

An Experience That Filled Me With Deep Gratitude
Arielle had been planning since the beginning of our collaboration on January 25, 2026, to complete her first 5-kilometer run in Zebbug and do so successfully. For Simon and me, this was an extremely important decision, because from that moment on, our work together had a clear goal. Every week, Arielle, Simon Cilia, and I dedicated at least two intensive training sessions — Arielle training 1-2 times on the track. We regularly shared all relevant information to ensure that Arielle viewed the run not just as a challenge, but also as an opportunity to develop an efficient running technique and economy — with the aim of consistently covering distances of at least 5 km with both Runnerblades in the future.
A special focus of our work was to support Arielle in consciously engaging her upper body just as much as her lower body. The goal was to develop a healthy and sustainable running economy that would bring her long-term joy and health in running.
Two weeks ago, we agreed that I would accompany Arielle on her first 5-kilometer run. What I experienced during that moment taught me humility and deep gratitude. Arielle’s journey up to that point showed me how important self-worth is, and how vital it is to actively nurture and continually grow this inner confidence.
She ran the 5 km plus an extra 1.5 km — sometimes walking, but never giving up or stopping. On the contrary: with strong will and conviction, she went far beyond her limits, carried by the knowledge of what the collaboration between Simon and me could achieve. The moment she crossed the finish line with her Runnerblades was simply unforgettable. It filled me with immense pride, because it was a small step with a big impact — and many more steps lie ahead, bringing Arielle closer to her dream.
