The research component trains counsellors to make valuable academic contributions to the theoretical and applied fields of counselling, and to the social world at large. The Department prides itself in offering courses that are hands-on as well as academic, and provides the opportunity for trainee counsellors to learn from practice, as well as theory. The varied and fully qualified lecturing staff specialise in the units taught and provide quality teaching and up-to-date material. The Department also organises lectures and seminars by renowned international academics and counsellors to promote further development. Further to its courses in Counselling, the Department also co-ordinates teacher training in Personal and Social Development at graduate and post-graduate level. These courses currently train secondary school teachers in developing self awareness and social competencies to be able to promote and deliver personal and social education in schools. Skills learned aim to develop knowledgeable, reflective and professional secondary school educators.
