The IMO International Maritime Law Institute was established under the auspices of the International

The Institute is an international centre for the training of specialists in maritime law. It also contributes to the development and dissemination of knowledge and expertise in international maritime law, with special reference to the international regulations and procedures for safety and efficiency of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution.

IMLI joins the international maritime community in celebrating World Oceans Day. This year, the theme chosen is “Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean”. Ever since its establishment, IMLI has constantly emphasized through its programmes and academic initiatives that the achievement of sustainability depends on oceans that are healthy. On this occasion, IMLI reiterates its commitment to supporting the international maritime community’s efforts to address the climate crisis for the benefit of both current and future generations.

On World Environment Day, IMLI joins the international community in responding to the urgent call for climate action.

As climate change continues to affect oceans, coastal communities and maritime activities worldwide, IMLI reaffirms its commitment to advancing effective ocean governance, strengthening the rule of international maritime law, and building the capacity of professionals dedicated to protecting the marine environment.

Through education, research and international cooperation, IMLI continues to prepare and inspire the maritime leaders of tomorrow to contribute towards a more sustainable and resilient future for our oceans and our planet.

A delegation from the Eastern Cape of South Africa paid a courtesy visit to the Institute. Headed by Mr. Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane (Premier of the Eastern Cape), the delegation was warmly welcomed by Professor Dr. Norman A. Martínez Gutiérrez (Director, IMLI), IMLI Faculty and Staff. H.E. Ms. Nosipho Nausca Jean Jezile (High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa to Malta) was also part of the delegation. Professor Dr. Martínez Gutiérrez delivered a presentation introducing IMLI, its mission and its programmes to the members of the delegation. During the IMLI Director’s presentation possible future cooperation between IMLI and the South African Authorities was discussed. A tour of the IMLI premisses followed soon after.
