Build up of skills and teaching strategies through the implementation of a mastery approach and using the correct tools effectively, ensures progression and continuity. Today the early years educators at Theresa Nuzzo engaged in a full day's training, focusing on the foundations of Math Mastery and it's components. It was a very fruitful session based on food for thought, discussion, sharing of ideas and experiences! Well done all!

“These games were used during small group work (3 children at a time) whilst the rest of the children in class were occupied during free play. I chose 4 games which the children took turns in rotation to play so all 3 children were occupied with a spare game to use if one child was quicker than the others. After a short explanation on how to use each resource the children were able to play on their own and even helped each other with suggestions and solutions whilst I was at hand to supervise. I found these resources fit very well within my own plans especially since I could split them up into numbers 1-5 and 6-10 for children with different abilities.
When one group was ready from these activities I would call another group to take their turn.
I feel that by the second term the children will be ready for a maths corner where the games will be available for them to play and share at will.
I would just like to add that the children are really enjoying these games and want to thank the Numeracy Team for providing us with ideas and resources which complement our own work in class." Ms Catherine Pace (Pre-Grade, St. Dorothy's Zebbug)

Co-teaching sessions with year 2 girls of Sacred Heart. A big thank you and well done to Ms Lathey, Ms Angela and Ms Liliana!
Lesson focus: counting money. We started the lessons by addressing their prior learning (recognition of coins), then we focused our attention on adding money. We made use of ten frames and blocks to help children 'see' the value of each coin and understand the importance of adding the value and not the coins. Questions asked targeted different abilities within the classrooms and helped children to extend their learning and understanding. Children were encouraged to discuss and work with their partner to reason out problems and find solutions.
