✨ Celebrating Ada Lovelace Day ✨

On the second Tuesday of October, we remember Ada Lovelace.

Ada Lovelace was born in 1815 and was encouraged by her mother to study maths, science and logic. In fact, she excelled in mathematics and science and is often referred to as the world’s ever first computer programmer for her invention of the computer algorithm.

Ada Lovelace was revolutionary in her perception of the computer. From Ada Lovelace’s pioneering vision to the next generation of changemakers, let us continue to challenge boundaries, break barriers, and inspire possibilities.

Today, we celebrate the women who dare to:

➡️ break stereotypes
➡️ imagine
➡️ innovate,
➡️ and shape the future of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.

💜 And something exciting is taking shape… Stay tuned as we look towards building a Women in STEAM Network. A space to connect, empower, and champion women across disciplines.

🎬 The work behind preserving Women’s Stories

Take a look behind the Women's Archive and the work to collect, preserve, and make women’s stories accessible for future generations.

As the Committee Chair puts it, the team strives “to delve into the private lives of key figures, as well as the public life of several women; those who forged their own story but also our own history.”

🫶 Today, on the International Day of Sign Languages, we join the international community to celebrate the linguistic identity of deaf people and sign language users across the world.

The Equity Office, together with the People, Culture & Engagement Directorate at the University of Malta are pleased to announce a new training opportunity.

Starting next year, UM staff will have the opportunity to participate in the 'Introduction to Maltese Sign Language (LSM)' sessions, developed in collaboration with the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology as part of the LSM Linguistics Practical Placements.

Learning sign language allows us to break barriers and bring people closer together.

📢 More information on how to register will be shared soon.

It was an honour for the Equity Office to be invited to take part in the Future Talent Forum Malta – SkillScape Global, held in collaboration with the Malta National Skills Council.

Bringing together voices from education, business, government and policy, the Forum explored the skills shaping the future of work – from AI and lifelong learning to talent development and adaptability.

Equity Coordinator, Nadia Abdilla, was a speaker on the panel “Different Journeys, Shared Belonging”, alongside:

✨ Andrew Jones, President, Brunel University London

✨Rachel Blackburn, Head of Culture, APS Bank

✨Harini Annadanam, AI Product Lead, Mentimeter

The session was facilitated by Danielle Solar, Executive Director at Future Talent Council.

We are grateful for the opportunity and look forward to continuing this collaboration and creating opportunities for further exchange. 🤝
