Q: Why do you play games like Spot It and UNO at the end of your lessons? Wouldnโt my child be better off playing word games?
A: Great question!
Games like Spot It and UNO might not look like traditional literacy learning, but they play a powerful role in building executive function โ the brain skills we need to learn effectively.
Executive function includes things like:
โข Working memory (holding and using information)
โข Attention and focus
โข Impulse control
โข Cognitive flexibility (switching between ideas or rules)
When children play these games, theyโre practising:
โจ Tracking rules and patterns
โจ Thinking quickly and flexibly
โจ Managing frustration and emotions
โจ Taking turns and staying engaged
These skills are essential for reading and writing. For example, a child needs executive function to:
๐ Follow the sequence of sounds in a word
๐ Stay focused on a sentence
๐ Check and correct their own work
So while it might look like โjust a game,โ itโs actually targeted brain training โ and ending sessions this way also helps children finish on a positive, fun note ๐
Learning isnโt just about what we teach โ itโs about building the brain skills that make learning possible.
Some other great games for building executive function are:
๐ง Memory โ strengthens working memory and attention
๐ Simon Says โ builds listening skills and impulse control
โก๏ธ Bop It โ encourages quick thinking and response inhibition
๐ฒ Connect 4 โ supports planning, strategy, and flexible thinking
๐ Go Fish โ develops memory, turn-taking, and focus
๐งฉ Jenga โ builds self-control, patience, and fine motor planning
The best part? These all feel like fun โ but theyโre quietly building the brain skills children need for reading, writing, and learning ๐
