Discovering the Potato 🥔

What started as a tuff tray exploration with soil and vegetables — including potatoes 🥔 , broccoli 🥦 and capsicum 🫑 — quickly turned into a wonderful sensory learning experience.

The children enjoyed washing 💦 the vegetables and became especially curious about the potatoes. They described them as “like balls, but not quite” and noticed they were “hard, but not too hard.” Through hands-on exploration, they investigated shape, texture and size while building language 🗣️ and observation 👀 skills.

The potatoes then became painting tools 🎨, encouraging creativity and experimentation. Educators also introduced both sweet potatoes and regular potatoes, pre-boiled for tasting and sensory play. The children loved mashing, exploring and, of course, tasting them!

A beautiful experience full of curiosity, sensory learning and discovery through play. 🌱

A simple DIY light table 💡, some flour, and a few plastic shapes ⭕️▪️🔻🔺💠 turned into a wonderful learning experience ✨

This sensory activity invited children to explore textures 👌, practice early pre-writing movements ✍️, strengthen fine motor skills, and develop hand-eye coordination 👌👀— all through play🫶. The glowing 🌟 surface added an extra layer of curiosity, focus, and creativity.

Activities like these also encourage concentration 💆, language development 🗣️, problem-solving, and independent exploration while creating a calm and engaging environment for learning 🫶.

Sometimes the simplest setups are the ones children enjoy the most 🤍

🍃A simple invitation to explore 🌿

Using playdough, olive leaves 🍃 , pebbles 🪨, and pinecones, the children enjoyed pressing natural resources into the dough to discover different prints, patterns, and textures. A lovely sensory experience filled with curiosity and creativity ✨

A child’s growing interest in birds 🐦 — inspired by daily visits to a public park before arriving at the centre 🏫— sparked a shared curiosity within the group 🫶. To extend this interest, we invited a pet canary 🦜into the environment for the day, creating opportunities for observation 👀, discussion 🗣️, wonder 💭 , and connection 🥰.

The children responded through many “languages”: attaching colourful feathers to paper birds🪶, using pegs to carefully transfer 🪶 , using DIY binoculars from recycled materials to search for the hidden bird 🐦 around the centre, and collaboratively building nests using leaves 🍃 🍁 and loose parts.

Through these experiences, the children explored relationships with nature, symbolic play, collaboration, and creative expression, while the environment acted as a space for inquiry 🧐 and discovery.💡

Today’s sensory play brought a little extra excitement… and a lot of curiosity! ❄️🧊

The children explored colourful blocks frozen inside one big ice cube, using their hands 🙌 , words 🗣️, and senses to investigate what they were feeling and seeing. Conversations quickly began:

“It’s cold!”
“The ice is melting!”

Sensory experiences like these encourage children to observe 👀, communicate 🗣️, problem-solve 🧠, and make discoveries through play. Exploring temperature 🌡️, texture, colour, and change helps develop language, critical thinking, and fine motor skills — all while having fun!

Learning through play allows children to engage naturally with the world around them, turning simple moments into meaningful educational experiences. 💙

What happens when art starts moving? 🎈🎨

Our children explored creativity in a whole new way by painting 🖌️ on balloons 🎈 🎈 suspended on a string. As the balloons moved around, the challenge became even more exciting — requiring concentration, coordination, patience, and problem-solving skills 🧠.

At first, some children observed from a distance 👀 and hesitated to join in. This is an important part of the learning process too. Through encouragement, curiosity, and seeing their friends engaged, confidence slowly grew and eventually every child became involved in the experience 🫶.

Activities like these support:
✨ Fine motor development
✨ Hand-eye coordination
✨ Risk-taking and confidence building
✨ Creative expression
✨ Social interaction and collaboration
✨ Resilience through trial and error

Most importantly, the laughter 😆 and excitement at the end showed us how meaningful hands-on learning can be when children are given the freedom to explore, experiment, and discover at their own pace. 💛

As part of our ongoing insect project 🐞🐜, the children explored a tuff tray filled with real leaves 🍃 and hidden insects.

This activity was inspired by the children’s interest in an ant 🐜 they spotted in our outdoor area. The little ones enjoyed searching carefully through the leaves 🍃 , finding insects, and sharing their discoveries with friends 😊

Through play and exploration, the children are developing curiosity 🔍, observation skills 👀, and an understanding of the natural world around them 🌍

One group of our little ones has been spending their days exploring nature and stepping into the role of farmers 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾. Their journey began with harvesting “plastic” vegetables 🌽 🍆🥕as part of imaginative play, which naturally led to planting something real—rucola 🥬.

Each child now cares for their very own rucola pot 🪴, taking pride in watering and nurturing it every day 🫶. This experience is helping them develop a sense of responsibility, patience, and connection to the natural world 🥰.

We also explored the carrot 🥕 as a real object. The children were invited to investigate its texture, shape, and smell, engaging their senses and building their understanding through hands-on discovery. The carrot was then used as a tool during a creative activity 🎨, allowing the children to express themselves while making connections between everyday objects and their environment.
