As 2024 comes to a close, we're thankful for the many great theatre productions that graced the Maltese stages throughout the year. We've had original, adapted and imported shows in Maltese, and English in mainstream as well as innovative venues.

However the end of the year is also a time to reflect on what the theatre community has lost. Those people who had dedicated much of their life to Maltese theatre and are devastatingly not with us to see the start of the new year.

Monica Attard was a star of the stage and screen whose contribution to local theatre was massive. Her most recent performance was in Richard Alfieri's two-hander 'Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks' for Teatru Salesjan in November 2022 and her work has inspired many over the decades while her sweet nature will ensure that she will be forever missed.

Polly March was a vibrant force of nature who worked in a great many productions locally and in the UK - serving as a mentor to many. Her last performance was as the matriarch in Terrence McNally's 'Mothers and Sons' at Theatre Next Door in April. Her sudden loss remains surreal. What shall we do without you Pol?

Marco Bartolo was a set painter who, for much of his life was synonymous with Teatru Manoel. Instantly recognisable by his iconic beard, boots and beret, Marco was a true artist who put his soul into his work. There will never be another one like Marco.

As the lifelong partner of former MADC chairman Martin Azzopardi, Simon Walker (left) was a consistent, comforting presence during a great many productions - whether lending a hand in the wardrobe department or in the first rows of the auditorium. Simon was a great gentleman and the theatre community is lucky to have had him in its fold for the last twenty years. He is immensely missed.

Sleep well friends, and thank you for everything.

Today we kick off an absolutely unbelievable weekend at the theatre – featuring a fantastic range of shows to enjoy…
First of all you have the final weekend of Saydon Studio’s Il-Każin tal-Imqarbin which has been generating a lot of well-deserved hype and is well-deservedly a season highlight. If you managed to get your hands on tickets for this sold-out show, you’re in for a memorable experience. 🏳️‍🌈🎼
Also into their final weekend there’s Joe White’s Għanjiet il-Baħħ at Spazju Kreattiv starring Simone Spiteri and Jacob Piccinino while the MADC Playhouse is hosting the final weekend of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs with a cast featuring Antonella Axisa, Edward Caruana Galizia, Erica Muscat and fast-rising talent Leah Grech.
Meanwhile My Son Pinocchio: Geppetto's Musical Tale opens for one weekend only at Sir Temi Zammit Hall for two shows only. 🤥🎹
Today is also opening night for Coriolanus at Teatru Salesjan. This show is directed by the late and great Polly March, making it an extremely bittersweet event. She was immensely proud of her young cast members and I’m sure she’ll be with every one of them in spirit tonight. Toi Toi and go well! ❤
As if that’s not enough, the Teatru Manoel Studio is is hosting Rhum & Clay’s meta-clowning show Project Dictator fresh from the UK. We have never seen something like this in Malte before.
To top it all off, the Spazju Kreattiv Cinema will be screening the National Theatre production of Nick Dear’s Frankenstein starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
It’s impossible to see everything but do try and see something. Happy theatre! 🇲🇹🎭

People often ask me: 'Malcolm, how do you write such amazing work? And why are you so gosh-darn funny all the time? How can I, a normal person, be more like you?'
Well... thanks to our latest collaboration with Theatre Lab Malta you can learn as much as you can handle. As part of our community-outreach project, I'll be giving workshops on scriptwriting and stand up comedy over the next few months.
Send a message to Theatre Lab Malta so you too can share my wit and wisdom. ✏️🎙🇲🇹🎭
