Conference on “Greater Bay Area, Regional Integration and
Global Governance”

The Institute of European Studies of Macau held successfully the Pearl River Delta Academy of International Trade and Investment Law (PRAIA) 2025, titled “Greater Bay Area, Regional Integration and Global Governance” on 8th November 2025, at the venue of Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau. The event was based on the cooperation between the Institute of European Studies in Macau (IEEM) and Peking University, School of Transnational Law (STL), Shenzhen Graduate School, in the Shenzhen campus.
The conference was attended by scholars from Europe, Singapore, South Korea, China, Hong Kong and Macau, who delved on issues relating to international trade and investment law and held discussions with the public composed of Hong Kong and Macau authorities, professionals and university students. The conference focused particularly on regional integration, Greater Bay Area, ASEAN and Global Governance.

The program was funded by the Macau Foundation.

The Macau Model European Union 2025 was a full day event held in N6 Building’s Ho Yin Conference Hall of University of Macau on 26th October 2025. It was a simulation of the European Council’s Summit attended by 54 students from 13 universities from Macao, Hong Kong and Mainland. After attending a training session online, the participants turned in position papers and assembled in Macau as an ice-breaking activity prior to the meeting.

As the chairman of the summit, Prof Paulo Canelas de Castro, President of the Institute of European Studies of Macau and also Jean Monnet Chair of University of Macau’s Faculty of Law, addressed the importance for holding this event to activate students’ learning about the EU and to extend social network at the same time. After debating, lobbying and modifying on the working papers in representation of the member states of the European Union, the 27 teams concluded with a resolution focusing on the topic “EU’s trade policy towards the United States”. As the chair of the jury, Prof Song Weiqing, Jean Monnet Chair from Faculty of Social Sciences of University of Macau, praised the delegates for their outstanding performance.

Eventually, the prizes of best position papers were awarded to Fu Bangzhe and Wang Zhenxu from University of Macau and also to Meng Yihan and Zhang Zixu from Sichuan International Study University. Second runner-up went to Nanjing University’s Xu Ziye and D**g Lijin while the first runner-up was awarded to Jin Jitao and Cui Jiawei from Chinese University of Hong Kong. The team formed by Hao Yifan and Wang Jingyi from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, who represented Austria in this simulation, were awarded the Champions of this event.

This activity was co-organized by the Institute of European Studies of Macau and the Youth Association of International Affairs, with support from the University of Macau and funding from Macau Foundation. Students from various universities could learn together and build new friendships. It was an extremely successful and enjoyable activity. The organizers therefore looked forward to assembling again a group of outstanding delegates for another conference of this kind in the future.

Celebration of 30th Anniversary of the Institute of European Studies of Macau

The Institute of European Studies of Macau (IEEM) celebrated its Pearl Jubilee Anniversary through a hybrid event (online plus presential) in its main premises on the evening of 23rd October 2025. IEEM was established in 1995 with the goal of facilitating knowledge, dialogue and understanding between Chinese and European cultures through various types of international conferences, activities and training programs. Prof Rui Martins, Vice-Rector of University of Macau and Dr Leonor Yi Zhong, Vice-President of Macau Foundation, congratulated and gave remarks on its successes and fruitful results. The President of IEEM, Prof. Paulo Canelas de Castro introduced its activities and achievements over the past 30 years and also the new actions, exchanging views with professors, graduates and friends. The Institute and the University of Macau have been jointly offering the master program in European Studies since 1997, having led to the graduation of more than four hundred students specialized in this area studies about the integration process in Europe. The conferences on Intellectual Property Law and of the Academy of International Trade and Investment Law have been going on since 2000. The European Union Studies Association Asia Pacific Conference and the first edition of the Academy of Sustainable Development and the Green Transitions have just been successfully completed, respectively in June and September. The Macao Model European Union that started in 2013 will also launch its new edition on 26th October 2025. In recent years, IEEM has also been offering language courses, weekend talks about Macau’s culture, history and architecture as well as academic seminars and workshops on contemporary international issues related to China and Europe, like the annual conferences on Multiple Modernities since 2016. The Institute has equally promoted publications and research projects on international relations, economic, legal and other matters. Its project, Creative Macau, has been serving the local arts and creative communities for 23 years to facilitate the development of the creative sector of Macau and its economic diversification. All the audience expressed recognition and praise for the Institute’s functioning over three decades and contributed ideas regarding new ways for the Institute to pursue its mission for the benefit of the community.
