The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM), in collaboration with PTM BIO, a biotechnology company in Hangzhou, hosted the Macau Symposium on Epigenomics, Multi Omics and Precision Medicine on 17 May. The event brought together leading 50 researchers and industry experts from Macao, Hong Kong, and the Chinese mainland to discuss the latest advances in multi-omics technologies and their applications in precision medicine, injecting new momentum into the innovative development of life sciences and medical research in the region. A research team led by Chuxia DENG, Chair Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM), has made a significant breakthrough in understanding resistance to radiotherapy. The study, for the first time, revealed distinct mechanisms underlying tumour-cell responses induced by low-dose versus high-dose radiotherapy. The team found that low-dose radiotherapy can significantly promote de novo protein synthesis and induce protein damage. Moreover, when combined with proteasome inhibitors, protein-damage clearance can be effectively blocked, thereby enhancing anti-tumour efficacy while reducing toxicity to normal tissues. The research findings have been published in the international journal Drug Resistance Updates. FHSSA recently organised the tenth iteration of the ‘Health, I Care!’ health knowledge quiz competition. The competition focused on the systematic consolidation and in-depth integration of knowledge within the field of health sciences. Upholding its educational philosophy of balanced physical and mental development and whole-person education, the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) of the University of Macau (UM) has long encouraged students to cultivate self-discipline, resilience and continuous personal growth through sports, alongside rigorous academic training. Three student athletes from different programmes within FHS: Wang Ho YUEN, Cheok Weng CHONG and Ka Hong CHIO; participated in the ‘Macau University Track and Field Championship’, competing respectively in long jump, running and throwing events. A research team led by Joong Sup SHIM, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM), in collaboration with researchers from Chongqing Medical University and Renji Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University, has discovered an unrecognised therapeutic vulnerability in VHL‑deficient renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most common form of kidney cancer. The study shows that RCC cells lacking the tumour suppressor von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) are highly sensitive to DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) inhibitors, revealing a promising precision medicine strategy for the major RCC subtype. The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Macau (UM) held the 12th session of its science outreach activity ‘The Pursuit of Research’ to enhance the understanding of and interest in biomedical sciences and scientific research among Macao secondary school students.
