The Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management and the Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming organized a study trip, “the Study Mission,” for 35 students to Las Vegas, USA, from 19 to 31 May 2024. The purpose of this trip was to enhance students’ real-life experience in the management of gaming and integrated resorts. This year, to echo the Macau SAR’s “1+4” strategy to boost economic diversification, the program of the study mission had brought in a number of highlights, including elements of “tourism + sports”, “tourism + shows”, and the like.

The Study Mission was led by Professor Li MIAO, Professor Davis Ka Chio FONG and Professor Jacey Ja Young CHOE. During the trip, students visited the properties of Wynn Las Vegas and MGM Resorts International respectively. The visits to these two integrated resorts included touring around hotel rooms, signature villas, different types of restaurants, retail, spa, golf club, floral team, baking team, chocolate making team, cake making team, human resources team, the backstage of show and theatre, and night club. Students had a good opportunity to observe the daily operations of these world-renowned companies in the tourism industry. The sharing sessions of the real-life experiences of their senior executives were also invaluable and informative for the students.

The tours to the mega sports complexes such as Allegiant Stadium, T-Mobile Arena and Michelob ULTRA Arena were spectacular. Students were excited by the innovative technology used to operate these mega complexes. They were shown how these facilities were run and managed to accommodate the vast variety of shows, sports and entertainment events/festivals.

The Study Mission this year was sponsored by the University of Macau Development Foundation, with Wynn Macau’s full sponsorship for the delegation’s accommodations and study program, and MGM’s thoughtful arrangement for a 3-day tour of its properties with the theme of "tourism + sports".
