28TH ASEACCU ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2022

The Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU) will be holding the 2022 physical conference on “Memory and Identity" on August 23-27, 2022 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia which will be hosted by St. Paul Institute. The faculty and staff conference will be held at the St. Paul Institute and Dara Airport Hotel from August 24-27, 2022. The student conference will be held at Phnom Penh Thmey Pastoral Center (PPTPC), St. Paul Institute, and Dara Airport Hotel from August 23-27, 2022. The faculty and staff conference registration fee is US$ 550 while the student conference registration fee is US$ 400. See the programs below for more details.

We are happy to announce that the University of Saint Joseph, Macao, has accepted the task of managing the ASEACCU Newsletter. We also would like to express our deepest gratitude to Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages, Taiwan, for managing the publication of the newsletter in the previous years.

During the plenary sessions of Day 2, three internationalization experts from the Philippines, Australia, and Macau shared how internationalization can be done in different university contexts.

University of Santo Tomas, Philippines was represented by Prof. Lilian Sison, PhD, while Mr. Kirk Doyle spoke from the Australian Catholic University's perspective. Finally, Prof. Alvaro Barbosa shared how small universities can be sustainable through internationalization and research initiatives.

The two-day webinar-workshop was ASEACCU's first activity of the kind, and is a prelude to future activities like the conference in Cambodia next year.

During the afternoon of Day 1's plenary sessions, three scholars presented updates on their work to show how research has thrived even during the pandemic.

Australian Catholic University's Professor Ester Cerin spoke lengthily about how the physical environment especially in urban cities impacts brain functioning and development, while Assumption University's Dean Marissa Chantamas emphasized the need for audiences to include sustainability as a factor in their consumption. Finally, University of Santo Tomas Professor Fr. Nicanor Pier Giorgio Austriaco, O.P. gave updates on the yeast-based oral Covid-19 vaccine being developed by UST researchers and scholars from Providence College, USA.

During the plenary sessions in the morning of Day 1, speakers talked about their institutions best practices during the pandemic. University of Santo Tomas, Philippines was represented by Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Cheryl R. Peralta, who spoke about teaching and learning, while St. Paul Institute, Cambodia's Director, Mr. Phon Sophal, talked about ensuring the wellness of stakeholders. Finally, University of Santo Tomas - Legazpi, Philippines's Vice-President for Finance and Administration, Fr. Edwin Lao, O.P., spoke about financial sustainability during the pandemic.
