Global Mapping of Macao

Global Mapping of Macao Global Mapping of Macao is a research initiative led by the Library of the Macau University of Science and Technology.

The project aims to collect historical maps of Macao to establish a collection to support scholarly research and public education. The Macau University of Science and Technology launched the project "Global Mapping of Macao" in 2013. Designed as a long-term research endeavor, the project is in pursuit of a trifold aim: the expansion of the global history of Macao as a research area, the development of a special collection of maps about Macao by purchasing or facsimileing; and the provision of a database on maps of Macao for research and public education. To accomplish these missions, the project must be led by research and cooperation. Thus, we organize international symposiums and exhibitions under the same name and publish conference proceedings, by which we build up connections and cooperations with scholars, libraries, museums, archives, and other map collection institutions. We also publish map albums, which are non-commercial publications, and will be sent to scholars and libraries as a gift.

Inset View of the Forbidden City North Front
This is an inset of a map of the route traveled by the Russian ambassador Leoff Vassilich Ismayloff (Lev Vasilievich Izmailov, 1685–1738) during his diplomatic mission to China in 1719, 1720, and 1721. Izmailov was appointed by Tsar Peter I (Peter the Great, 1672–1725) to lead a mission to the Qing court in Beijing, with the purpose of negotiating trade and diplomatic relations between the Russian Empire and the Qing dynasty.
The inset inside a drape cartouche held by seven cherubs and flanked by representations of Chinese officials, depicts in a bird’s eye view of the North Front of the Forbidden City in Beijing, showing the Gate of Divine Might. This northern wall, facing Jingshan Hill, was strategically important and symbolically aligned with the city’s imperial axis.

Macao Peninsula in 1557
This is a small map of the Macao Peninsula in 1557, a pivotal year in Macao’s history, when the Portuguese established their settlement, marking the beginning of continuous European presence in East Asia. The map outlines the peninsula’s relief and key sites, including Praia Grande, São Francisco, Bom Parto, Ilha Verde, Praia de Cacilhas, Macau Siac, Praia do Manduco, among others.
Near Barra, the map unusually labels the area as “Makok” (A-Ma-Gok, Pavilion of A Ma), a reference to the Goddess A Ma. Her cult was central to Macao’s maritime identity, and its inclusion here highlights the blending of local tradition with the early European exploration.

Atlas Novus Frontispiece: Science and Symbolism
Frontispiece from the 1663 Spanish edition of the 𝐴𝑡𝑙𝑎𝑠 𝑁𝑜𝑣𝑢𝑠, published just a year before Jan Janssonius’ death. Designed as an architectural stage, it symbolically presents the atlas as a grand intellectual performance.
At the top, a celestial globe crowns the title, flanked by Claudius Ptolemy holding an armillary sphere and dividers, and Marinus of Tyre with a scrolled map. Below, a terrestrial globe rests among scholarly instruments, books, rulers, and dividers, underscoring the scientific and intellectual foundations of early modern mapmaking.

Early 17ᵗʰ Century Mapping of the East Indies
This detail comes from a map of the East Indies by Manuel Godinho de Erédia (1563–1623), the Portuguese cartographer, cosmographer, and historian of mixed Portuguese Malay descent. The map is notable for its unusual accuracy for the early 17ᵗʰ century: Korea is correctly depicted as a peninsula, Japan follows the cartographic model of Luis Teixeira (c. 1564–1604), and Papua New Guinea appears as a complete island rather than attached to the speculative 𝑇𝑒𝑟𝑟𝑎 𝐴𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑠 𝐼𝑛𝑐𝑜𝑔𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑎. At the mouth of the Pearl River, Macao is prominently marked near several islands, underscoring its role as a vital maritime hub. This emphasis reflects the city’s importance in trade networks and its centrality within the broader China trade.

Imperial Beijing: A Ming Palace in Qing-Era Mapping
This copperplate map of Beijing places the Forbidden City at its heart, built between 1406 and 1420 under the Yongle Emperor of the Ming dynasty. Its walls and walkways are drawn with care, while the surrounding streets appear less precise, reflecting the traditional emphasis on imperial authority in Chinese cartography.
The map’s title links it to Antoine Gaubil (宋君榮), a French Jesuit at the Qing court who shared Chinese knowledge with European scholars. His role in transmitting works like this highlights the Jesuit mission’s unique bridge between Chinese traditions and European scholarship.

Camões Garden: A Mansion’s Legacy in Macao
This illustration depicts the house inside Camões Garden in Macao, drawn by Portuguese Romantic painter João Pedroso (1823–1890). The estate was first owned by merchant Manuel Pereira (1757–1826), later inherited by his son in law Lourenço Caetano Cortela Marques (1811–1902), who erected the first bust of Luís Vaz de Camões (ca. 1524–1580). The property was once leased to the British East India Company, and even hosted George Macartney (1737–1806) during his 1793–1794 mission to China.
The view shows the house nestled among garden walls, with the inner harbour and vessels in the background. Notably absent is the Protestant Cemetery (est. 1821), which later became a key site of Macao’s multicultural history, housing graves of figures such as artist George Chinnery (1774–1852).

Macao Emphasized in Early Modern Mapping
This map of China Proper, including Korea and Japan, depicts particular detail when compared to maps of the same period. The Great Wall is prominently drawn, the Yellow River under the toponym “Hoambo R.” and even the Gobi Desert. Korea is correctly shown as a peninsula, and the outline of Japan follows the Teixeira model, a tradition rooted in Portuguese mapping.
Equally fascinating are the imaginative elements: “Parts Unknown” stretching beyond Eastern Tartary, and the Seas of Japan appear as “Sea of Korea”. Macao is emphasized in a larger script than other toponyms to denote its importance.

From Fuzhou to London: A Rare Ming Map
This map is based on a rare 1605 Chinese woodblock map printed in Fuzhou, titled “Complete View of the Topography, Astral Correspondences, and Origins of Personages of the Imperial Ming Great State, Recorded in its Entirety.” Once brought to London and later described by Samuel Purchas, it depicts China Proper with eleven named cities, including Beijing, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Macao, alongside rivers, lakes, and mountains.
The map is remarkable for its synthesis of Chinese cartography and Jesuit-influenced toponyms, with insets featuring portraits of Matteo Ricci and Chinese figures. Purchas misunderstood certain features, such as the Gobi Desert, yet his account preserved this extraordinary artifact of Ming-era geography and, by rendering it into Latin, made it accessible to a global audience.
