Inset View of the Forbidden City North Front
This is an inset of a map of the route traveled by the Russian ambassador Leoff Vassilich Ismayloff (Lev Vasilievich Izmailov, 1685–1738) during his diplomatic mission to China in 1719, 1720, and 1721. Izmailov was appointed by Tsar Peter I (Peter the Great, 1672–1725) to lead a mission to the Qing court in Beijing, with the purpose of negotiating trade and diplomatic relations between the Russian Empire and the Qing dynasty.
The inset inside a drape cartouche held by seven cherubs and flanked by representations of Chinese officials, depicts in a bird’s eye view of the North Front of the Forbidden City in Beijing, showing the Gate of Divine Might. This northern wall, facing Jingshan Hill, was strategically important and symbolically aligned with the city’s imperial axis.
