4 Main Ship Propulsion Methods
​To move massive vessels across the ocean, marine engineering utilizes four primary propulsion systems. Each is chosen based on the ship's specific mission, from cargo transport to high-speed naval operations.
​1. Diesel Propulsion
​This is the most common method for commercial vessels like container ships. A massive diesel engine is connected directly to a shaft, which turns the propeller. It is highly efficient for long-haul voyages at steady speeds.
​2. Diesel-Electric
​Frequently used in cruise ships and submarines, this system uses diesel generators to create electricity. This power then drives an electric motor connected to the propeller. It is prized for being quiet and flexible, allowing for better maneuverability.
​3. Gas Turbine
​Typically found on fast naval frigates and destroyers, the gas turbine engine works similarly to a jet engine. It uses a gearbox to transfer high-speed rotation to the propeller. This setup is incredibly fast and light, providing rapid acceleration.
​4. Nuclear Propulsion
​Used in aircraft carriers and icebreakers, a nuclear reactor generates heat to produce steam. This steam drives a steam turbine, which turns the propeller. The greatest advantage is its long-range capability, allowing ships to operate for years without refueling.
