🥰 Teaching shapes to PreKG students🥰 should be fun, visual, and hands-on rather than memorizing definitions.
✅ For PreKG, start with Circle, Square, Triangle, Rectangle, then gradually introduce Oval, Star, Heart, Diamond, etc.
✅ 1. Start with a Shape Song
Use actions while saying:
Circle Round and round!
Square Four equal sides!
Triangle Three sides!
Rectangle Two long, two short!
Have children trace the shape in the air with their fingers.
✅ 2. Shape Hunt Find the Shape!
Tell students:
Can you find a circle?
Children look around the classroom and point to:
Clock Circle
Window Rectangle
Book Rectangle
Building block Square
Roof picture Triangle
Make it a game: Touch something that is a circle!
✅ 3. Shape Sorting Game
Give students different colored paper shapes.
Ask them to put:
All circles one basket
All squares another basket
All triangles another basket
Then ask:
Why do these belong together?
✅4. Make Shapes
Give children clay/playdough or sticks.
Ask them to make:
A circle
A triangle
A square
A rectangle
This helps develop fine-motor skills + shape recognition.
✅ 5. Shape Art
Give students different shapes and let them create a picture.
For example:
Circle + Triangle + Rectangle = House
Circles + Rectangle = Robot
Circles + Triangle = Ice cream
Ask:
What shapes did you use?
✅ 6. Shape Movement Game
Put large shapes on the floor.
Call:
Jump to the triangle!
Stand inside the circle!
Walk around the square!
This is excellent for KG because it combines learning + physical movement.
✅ 7. Story-Based Learning
Use a simple story:
The Shape Family
One day, Circle went for a walk.
Circle saw Square.
Then Triangle came along.
They wanted to build a house together!
Show each shape as the character appears.

✅ Learning Outcomes
By the end of the lesson, children should be able to:
Recognize basic shapes
Name circle, square, triangle and rectangle
Match objects with shapes
Sort shapes
Create simple pictures using shapes
Describe simple features such as sides and corners
✅ PreKG teaching tip:
Don't focus too much on definitions like A triangle is a polygon with three sides.
Instead, use Triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners with objects, movement, songs, and games.
This makes the concept much easier for young learners.🥰🥰🥰🥰
