International Day to Protect Education from Attack
Today, we stand together to mark the International Day to Protect Education from Attack. Every child has the right to learn freely, safely, and joyfully. Yet, in times of war and political conflict, children are too often reduced to collateral damage. Around the world, the powerful use weapons to oppress the weak, enforcing a brutal law of the jungle—where might makes right.
In Kawthoolei, the military junta - State Security and Peace Commission (SSPC) is destroying children’s lives every single day with airstrikes and heavy weapons. They deliberately target schools, fully aware that children are inside, studying. The attacks on Nawt Taet Khee Middle School (September 3, 2025) , U Moo Hta High School in Meh Proo village tract (August 19, 2025) and others prove this beyond doubt. There was no battle at these times—only classrooms filled with children. Yet, they opened fire, seeking the sound of children’s screams and bloodshed.
Communities are struggling against all odds to keep schools open, to give children a chance at happiness and learning. But the military junta seeks to burn that hope. They want to destroy not just classrooms, but future of our children—our future leaders. They are killing dreams and lives inside the very places meant to nurture them.
And the world knows.
The world hears.
Yet, despite knowing and hearing, too many continue to engage with those who commit these atrocities. That silence, that cooperation, deepens the tragedy.
On behalf of KECD, our leaders at every level—central, district, and township—pledge to continue working hand in hand with all who stand with us. We will keep protecting our schools and children. Because safeguarding children is not just our duty—it is the responsibility of all humanity, of every citizen of the world.

75th Karen Martyrs’ Day

On August 12, 1950, our national leader, Saw Ba U Gyi, along with General Saw Sai Kay, was killed in a battle with enemy forces at a hut in Tha Kaw Koe village. Since that day, we, the Karen people, have continued our long struggle for democracy, equality, and political rights alongside other ethnic nationalities in the Union of Myanmar.

Throughout this journey, many of our people have given their lives, shed their blood, and endured countless hardships in the fight for our national rights. To honor their ultimate sacrifice, we have designated August 12 as Karen Martyrs’ Day, the day our leaders fell in the line of duty.

This year, August 12, 2025, marks the 75th anniversary of Karen Martyrs’ Day.
As KECD, we believe it is our solemn national duty to honor this day with deep respect and remembrance. Even as we face ongoing challenges and difficulties, we must never forget the martyrs who gave their lives for our freedom and future.

We call on all Karen people to join us in heartfelt tribute on August 12—to remember, to reflect, and to stand united in their honor.
