Life and story of a Theravada Buddhist monk from Thailand

13/05/2026

"I can't wait to say THANKS in person to the monks, to meet my colleagues and, of course, to meet new people," says Dr. Luciana dos Santos Duarte, WPI Alumni from the Netherlands joining "Disconnect to Reconnect" meditation retreat in Lede, Belgium this July. Currently working as a lecturer in "Industrial Design Engineering" and a consultant at "Amazonia Design", she remembers how she first joined a WPI meditation retreat in Thailand back in 2014. "I am very familiar, very comfortable with the type of meditation they practice and lessons for self-development," she says. "All this has helped me a lot to become a way more aware of my thoughts, to navigate through some challenges in life."

If you want to meet Luciana and many others joining our meditation retreat in Lede, Belgium this summer, most welcome to register here:

“If You Want To Go Fast, Go Alone. If You Want To Go Far, Go Together.” – African Proverb
Though individual practice is important, like-minded community of fellow meditators and peace workers is an essential part on this Path. Whenever we feel down, need an encouragement or an advice, it's that sentence from a friend, a mentor or a teacher that can help us stand up again. Would you like to be a part of such a community? Feel free to join us this summer.

Clean mind leads to tidy mind; tidy mind leads to polite mind; polite mind leads to punctual mind. Meditation above all changes our attitudes, behaviors and values. We start paying more attention not only to our external environment making sure it's clean, tidy and organized, but also our interactions with ourselves and others keeping the principles of clean, tidy, polite and punctual in mind. In fact, this comes automatically once the mind is trained.

If you want to train your mind with us, here's an opportunity:

Life inevitably presents us both ups and downs. Staying centered means keeping a balanced view of life's happenings and developing a skill to perceive the reality as it is.

This July, WPI offers a training where the skill to stay centered is being practiced in a safe and secluded environment - a perfect "swimming pool" - throughout all daily activities - waking up, eating, walking, talking to others - so that after the training you feel more confident to "swim in the sea" and become more resilient towards life's challenges.

"Sabai" is a Thai word and it means "comfortable, relaxed, happy". On our retreat, we will be having 2 nutritious meals a day and afternoon refreshments (pana) thus practicing mindful and balanced eating that is helpful for meditation. Along with sabai environment, sabai people and sabai teaching, sabai food is an important component to make this practice as comfortable as possible for us.
