Throwback pic! This was on a train heading up to Seoul, South Korea, hence the peace signs, and the photographer was my mom, .joanne, who was meeting my future husband for the very first time.

We're coming up on our sixth wedding anniversary this month. I couldn't choose a better partner in this adventurous life. Even when things are hard, or overwhelming, or daunting, he's a fantastic teammate.

Even before I became an editor, people assumed I was a pedant. Now they imagine that I spend all day imposing obscure grammar rules on authors, tidying up their syntax, corralling their commas, and eviscerating their em dashes.

Instead, most of the time I'm trying to find technical loopholes or the terminology necessary to describe (and allow) the lexical arabesques and grammatical pirouettes that turn writing not into a march but a dance across the page. Few things bring me more joy than working with an author who's found a way to innovate with language. Why on earth would I try to strip the artistry out of their writing?

If we wanted our books to behave, we'd let the robots make them. To err is human, and isn't art the simply divine expression of that humanity?

Working with Erin Brenner has been such a great experience, as I've gotten to see first-hand how top-notch editing happens. Her workflows are smooth, her rates are fair, the team is stellar, and the work is always interesting. Thanks, Erin!
