1985–2026
It is with profound sadness that we remember the life and legacy of Professor Jason Arday, a pioneering Black British academic, educator, author and advocate whose journey inspired people across the UK and beyond.
Professor Arday made history when he became the youngest Black person appointed to a professorship at the University of Cambridge, serving as Professor of Sociology of Education. His work explored some of the most important issues facing education and society, including race, inequality, higher education, mental health, neurodiversity and inclusion.
For many within the Black community, his presence at one of the world's most prestigious universities represented something bigger than one individual achievement. It represented visibility, possibility and representation within spaces where Black academics have historically been underrepresented.
Beyond titles and institutions, Jason was a father, partner, son, brother, uncle, colleague, teacher and friend. Those who worked alongside him have remembered his kindness, generosity and commitment to supporting others.
His passing at just 41 years old is deeply saddening.
May his family, friends, students and all those whose lives he touched find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
His contribution to conversations around race, education, disability, neurodiversity and equality will remain part of his legacy.
