📊 Thursday, 5th June 2025 – The intellectual webinar "AI Literacy for STEM Education" successfully engaged an enthusiastic audience via Webex and Facebook Live, streamed across the official platforms of Pendidikan Sains dan Matematik Inovatif. The session recorded an impressive turnout of 162 participants, reflecting strong interest in integrating artificial intelligence into science and mathematics education. A big thank you goes out to everyone who attended and supported the success of this dynamic session.
🎓 The invited speaker, Dr. Joonhyeong Park, Assistant Professor from the Natural Science and Science Education Department, National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, delivered an engaging and thought-provoking presentation. He explored the importance of AI literacy among educators and the practical potential of AI in enhancing STEM teaching and learning across various educational levels.
🧠 Dr. Park emphasized the urgent need to integrate AI into school education, drawing examples from educational systems in the USA, Singapore, and South Korea. He pointed out that one of the major barriers is the lack of teacher confidence, especially in applying AI within the STEM and TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) domains.
💡 As a solution, Dr. Park recommended that teachers and students refer to established AI guidelines and that universities should offer more AI-related courses to tackle the issue of teacher incompetency in AI integration, especially for those without a background in computer science.
🌐 Additionally, Dr. Park highlighted the bias issues in AI-powered personalized learning assistants, emphasizing how cultural differences may impact their effectiveness, particularly when AI systems are developed globally but not localized to the learners' context.
💬 The session was moderated by Mohamad Zaidi Zahaba, a second-year student of Bachelor of Science with Education (Mathematics) with Honours. A brief Q&A segment followed the presentation, offering participants the chance to pose insightful questions on AI ethics, implementation strategies, and curriculum alignment. Dr. Park’s answers were both practical and inspiring, especially for educators aiming to equip themselves with future-ready digital competencies.
