She became one of the richest African American of the 20th century and North America's first black multi-billionaire, has been ranked the greatest black philanthropist in American history.
Her talk show, 'The Oprah Winfrey Show', was the highest-rated television program of its kind. A woman of unbelievable resolve and great empathy, she used her natural talents, combined it with grit and resilience, making her a force to be reckoned with.
Oprah's big break was an accident. An accident which Oprah’s hard work and dedication had more than adequately prepared her to exploit. Channeling the Roman Philosopher Seneca, Oprah later characterized her lucky break by saying:
“I feel that luck is preparation meeting opportunity.”
She was born in rural Mississippi in extremely poor conditions. In 1971, while she was still in high school, Oprah’s style and emotional delivery won her the attention of and a position with a radio station in Nashville.
In 1982, Oprah was the co-host of the local television news in Baltimore Maryland. As part of their job search efforts, one of the station’s producers created a montage tape of their work and sent it to a number of major-market stations, including WLS in Chicago. Coincidentally, one of the on-air personalities on the tape was Oprah Winfrey.
The WLS executives were immediately impressed with Ms. Winfrey and asked her to audition for A.M. Chicago, a glorified cooking show. Did Oprah know anything about preparing food on live television? Heck no. Did this slow her down? Of course not.
Oprah has unique leadership skills in terms of compassion, ethics, inspiration and justice. She has the ability inspire people because she conforms to what is right and she fights for it.

How doesn’t know Jack Ma?
Also known as Ma Yun, he is a Chinese business magnate and philanthropist.
He is the founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group, a family of successful Internet-based businesses.
He is the richest man in China, the founder of Alibaba Group. Alibaba’s staggering initial public offering of $25 billion shattered all records and became the largest IPO ever. It makes it worth $231 billion, more than Amazon and eBay combined.

This goes to show that anyone with good enough passion can be successful provided that they have the courage to pursue their dreams. Even when the odds are against them, remember that China back then was backwards and just opened up to the world when he founded Alibaba. There’s something to be said for spontaneity. Richard Branson got the idea for Virgin Atlantic in the middle of a vacation. He was in his late 20’s, traveling through the Virgin Islands with his girlfriend, taking a break from the fast expansion of his record company. Their flight to Costa Rica had been cancelled when they got to the airport. According to his account in his book Screw It, Let’s Do It:
“People were roaming around, looking lost. No one was doing anything – so I did. I chartered a plane for $2,000. I divided that by the number of people. It came to $39 a head. I borrowed a blackboard and wrote on it: Virgin Airways. $39 single flight to Puerto Rico.”
It’s the bold, problem-solving, and action-taking ways of Branson that’s turned him into a global icon.

Calculating your risks is important. Branson used to have a television show called The Rebel Billionaire. At the final episode he gave the winner a double or nothing chance with a coin flip. He said he was proud to see the contestant walk away with the check without flipping the coin. He says he always acts bold, but never gambles. There’s a huge difference between calculated risks and gambles.
